“Really liked this place”

Thought this place was pretty cool. Was good reasonable price. The room was clean and bed was tidy. Bathrooms were good and clean too. was a good place to meet people and they put on a weekly free bbq which we thought was pretty cool.
The owner was a pretty cool guy too and we had a beer with him and chatted about how he puts on live gigs in the parking lot occasionally

It is an old hotel which has been turned into a backpackers, so don't expect anything too flash. However, it is tidy and well maintained, equipped with warm thermal heating, a resident dog and cat, selection of DVD's to watch, a bar and friendly staff. Great deck area at the back for relaxing. I have stayed about 6 times and always feel looked after.

Just loved the place, been here 2 now and it's absolutely lovely. There's a lot to do in the surroundings areas, but it's also more then ok to just hangout in one of the sofas for a day. The staff is amazing, they will make you feel at home. There's different activities every night, poker or pool or free BBQ. Just an awesome place, stay an extra night if you get the chance.

This was a clean, organised, youth friendly and efficient organisation. With a focus on the assistance of local at risk youth through the running and funds recouped from the hotel. The workers are a mix of travellers and locals with a bunch of different languages present.

Room Tip: They'll give you a free room if you help the running of the centre.

We had 2 double rooms here for a group of 4 ..both were very nice! Our ensuite was spacious, clean, and the decor is homely. It was separate from the main building, which was quieter and more secluded. It was very easy checkin, and they were very accommodating! There was lots of brochures with local activities, and sign ups right at the front desk. Wi-fi was $4, but only worked in the main house. They offered to do your laundry.. which is great so you can go and enjoy the town! The location is easy walking to the lake and downtown.

I was most impressed by the decor in the main lobby/ tv area... it was so funky, artsy.. and fun... it truly made you feel a little eccentric and friendly! It has a common area for dining/bar, a DJ booth, as well as a great space outdoors for relaxing and dining. The hottub also seemed great (even though we did not go in). It had a neat herbal garden for cooking. I truly loved the "vibe" and would highly recommend anyone to go here.

My partner and I stayed here for three nights and we loved it. We've travelled up and down both islands and this was my overall favourite hostel.

Firstly, there's a nice big loungroom with a tv and DVD player (plus loads of DVDs). The first night we stayed one of the staff offered us popcorn as we watched a movie with other guests. It was a small thing but somehow made me feel at home.

There's a free jacuzzi which is on most of the day, plus a huge outdoor eating area and two kitchens. The downstairs one was a tad pokey but the upstairs one meant that we never had to wait to use it.

Another small touch was that the staff actually knew my name after only one or two days. Again, its a nice homely feel.

The Palace is right next to PacknSave so shopping is a blitz. There was a reggae concert on one of the nights we were there which was fun.

We stayed in a private room and my only complaint was that the shower wasn't very powerful and the bed was very creaky. Minor things really. Also because our room was at the end of the decking near the stairs we had about five instances of people walking into our room (maybe they thought it was an exit to the road). They always apologised and closed the door but didn't seem to explain why they'd opened it in the first place?

Overall, this was my favourite hostel of our trip. Staff were all very friendly, the owner Chris was a nice bloke and the hostel was well maintained. I'd highly recommend it to other travellers coming through Rotorua.
