“A `must see'”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Ohinemutu is an authentic area of Rotorua with Maori living with the benefit of a thermal bore in their garden. A bore also heats the church and you can feel the warmth from below. Once inside the church go along to the righthandside and sit to enjoy the etching of Jesus in a Maori cloak (korowai) designed as if he is walking from Lake Rotorua. Our visit was enhanced by beautiful peaceful hymns sung in Maori. If in Rotorua, this is a place I always visit, so for me is a `must see'.

“Historic church in Maori village”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

This church in Ohinemutu Village was truly lovely. Built in 1914 it had a Tudor style exterior and a traditional Maori interior. The walls are covered in bamboo cane bound with twine to make decorative patterns. Wonderful stained glass windows include more unusual green designs. A more modern window had an etched figure of Christ who appeared to be walking on the water of Lake Rotorua! Soft music set a reverent atmosphere. Best of all the pew ends were elaborately carved and set with paua shells.
Outside were many white graves, plus a simple gravestone of Rev Seymour Mills Spencer. He arrived as a missionary from Hartford USA and landed in1841.
The nearby thermal springs and Maori Meeting House are worth seeing too.

“A must see and free!”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

The whole Ohinemutu environment provides a free aspect to Maori life and culture. The church offers so much history and an amazing stained glass window. A must do for visitors who are new to both geothermal activity and/or Maori culture. Always a quiet place for solace and learning.
