Mt Tarawera is a mountain on the outskirts of Rotorua. It has Lake Tarawera conveniently placed in front of it, providing for a very scenic landscape. The Lake Tarawera suburb is a mixture of holiday homes, and higher end housing. The suburb has spectacular views of Mt Tarawera itself, which is located at the far end of the lake, that the Lake Tarawera suburb skirts.

You can hire a self-drive boat from Lake Tarawera, to travel across the lake to the base of Mt Tarawera. Sailors can also navigate to the steam-heated beach by the lake - the water is warm due to the geothermal activity.

There are many tourist operations to fly/walk/four wheel drive to Mt Tarawera. The mountain, a volcano, erupted in 1886; with up to 150 people dying due the large amount of ash & mud that was forced out of mountain.

If you can actually make it to the top this is an amazing trip. the kaitiaki are great hosts and know a lot about the area and its history.
Check the weather before you book as they close the track up if there has been too much rain

Although this lake is a little further out of town, Its a gem, stunning, great for swimming in the summer and a lovely area to stay. Take a picnic and enjoy

Absolutely awesome experience. Approached by local 4WD tour company is best. Great scree run into crater with an easy walk out to be transported down by 4WD. Spooky place. Local Maori have checkpoints, so don't expect to get up the Moutain for free in your own 4WD
