The best thing about this hotel has to be the lovely couple who run the place!

They were very welcoming & made some excellent recommendations for things to do around Rotorua.

The motel is located next to the racecourse, hence the name ‘Sport of Kings' and is an easy drive into Rotorua itself.

The accommodation was clean & welcoming & my husband loved the reclining chairs for sitting in front of the TV relaxing after a hard days sightseeing.

Our room had a private spa pool, which was located outside our bedroom & was covered by a roof & carpeted. We would have loved to take advantage of it, but unfortunately we were staying in Winter (June) and it was too wet & cold.

The motel was conveniently located close to the main road in & out of Rotorua, so we were able to get around quickly & easily.

We had a cooked breakfast each day which was delicious & well prepared & always delivered at the time we’d asked for.

For sightseeing:

I recommend visiting the Wai-o-Tapu springs, about 20mins drive from Rotorua & definitely visit the mud pools (which are free to get to & by far the best thing to see outside the park itself). The Champagne pool is amazing, which is inside the Wai-o-Tapu park & the Lady Geyser which goes off at 10am each day is well worth seeing too.

If you have time & the inclination, do a Maori experience. We did the dinner & walk combo from Te Puia which went for about four hours. I was worried that this was too long, but the guides were excellent & the time really flew! We really enjoyed seeing & listening to the traditional Maori singing, they had amazing voices & it was a wonderful experience.

There was some audience participation too, with the women getting up & learning the ‘poi dance’ and the men getting up and doing the ‘haka’.

If you want to book any sightseeing, ask at the Motel’s front desk & they’ll give you a 10% off voucher for the experience.

Roomy & well equipped - very helpful management - handy location for downtown and main roads - fair value for the location - can't comment on the pool as we stayed during the August cold snap.

It is our delight to be helpful to our guests so they are able to make the most of their stay here at the Sport Of Kings Motel. You really should have braved the cold for a swim in the heated pool, even tho it was cold. It is very refreshing, we try to go most mornings even when there is a FROST. Maybe next time.

We stopped overnight here on our way through the North Island and we all wished we had chosen to stay longer!

Right from the off things exceeded our expectations. Ian was most welcoming and helpful and was well able to help with the dietary requirements of one of our party. The room was very well furnished and the beds were super comfortable.

The highlights for us were the great breakfasts and the outdoor pool. What can be better that relaxing in a hot outdoor pool in the middle of a winter's evening!

We would go back in a shot.

Having never been particularly enamoured of Rotorua in the past I decided after this mini holiday (for family member I was just her support) that Rotorua is THE perfect place to be during a cold NZ Winter. Thanks to all the geothermal activity its really quite warm at times! Anyway used Tripadvisor (as always) to chose a hotel, particularly wanted one with private spa and found this hotel. Happy to say it delivered. Friendly service, spotlessly clean rooms, we had the one bedroom spa unit which suited two singles who wanted their own space each (there is a single bed in the lounge room and a double bed in the bedroom) so infact it could easily sleep a couple plus one. The spa was wonderful for our aches and pains. We liked having a telly each! but mostly what I liked about this unit was how warm and toasty I was the entire time, a big plus for this time of year. Only grizzle we had was not having very good wireless internet access, extremely slow or non existent at times, HOWEVER, they were in the process of some renovations at the time and we were advised upon arrival that it may be a problem. My only advice for anyone then who might really really want internet is to enquire upon booking. This hotel is in a quiet area (ie I notice that Fenton Street has hotels all along it and Fenton Street is also a main street so more likely to have traffic noise - not a big problem in the winter mind you, not like the place was jumping), this hotel is about one maybe two blocks back from that thoroughfare so very quiet indeed. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We totally agree that Rotorua is the perfect place to be during a cold winter. The geo thermal steam is used to heat our water for all the showers, 37 wall radiators for central heating. On top of that 10 private spa's & our out door swimming pool, to 34 to 36 C during the winter. The wireless internet issues are now over as we have put in 2 new areals & repositioned them, works great now. Thank you for your kind remarks, it is always a pleasure to have happy guests. This is the fourth time our sports team have stayed with Ian and Jyl. They have recently upgraded the motel rooms which are always lovely and clean. The full ovens are a real bonus when cooking for so many. Their friendly manner makes for an enjoyable stay. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: One bedroom units have the added bonus of your own mineral spa which is great.

Exceptionally clean and located in a quiet street - an absolute priority for us. The apartment had super-comfortable beds with all the amenities required for 3 adults and 2 children. Rooms had been heated before arrival (being mid-winter) and we had plenty of extra towels for spa use. The apartment wasn't spacious but it was adequate. Really enjoyed the spa and heated swimming pool. Appreciative too of management (we had a late departure and couldn't return until later to collect luggage). Highly recommended!

We had the family room which was great, it was a cold wet weekend but our rooms were lovely and warm. The children swam in the rain in the heated pool and we enjoyed the spa. The owners were really lovely and helpful and went out of there way for us and helped us plan the weekend. Thank you very much it made our mothers birthday really special!

It's always a delight for us when guests enjoy their stay & get really good value from our spa's & pool. We lift the temperature of the pool for the winter, currently 36 degrees C. As we are on geothermal heating our rooms are always warm. Wonderful that you had such a special birthday for your Mum. Regards Ian & Jyl
