This lodge is in a beautiful setting, which is peaceful and relaxing. The rooms were also beautiful and the open fire in the room was a delight. However the level of service was a disappointment as was the food. The dinner especially was very ordinary. We were greeted by the food and beverage manager on arrival who told us there was no chef on tonight and he was cooking dinner. This is unacceptable in this type of place! Thank goodness there was a Chef for breakfast and that was excellent. Even though there was only 6 guests in total the Manager got my name wrong, used the wrong wine class at dinner and was a little unfriendly. Whilst these are only little things, for the amount you are paying you expect better. I think there are probably better options in NZ for you to stay and enjoy the delights of NZ cuisine, wine and service. Can't fault the actual setting or lodge though.

Unfortunately we didn't have much time to enjoy this beautiful place or I might have given it 5 stars. The lodge is well appointed with a luxurious "hunting" lodge motif. There are lots of mounted heads and complete bodies too. So, if you are in PETA, this is not the place for you.

There is a beautiful billiards room, game room, sitting area and kitchen to relax in as well. Breakfast and a gourmet dinner are included in your stay. Each suite is tastefully decorated with a beautiful sitting area, oversized bathroom and a patio with table and chairs.

Lots of activities are available on property including hunting, fishing, kayaking, archery, hiking, etc. etc.!!! There is a large board in the kitchen area highlighting special activities and opportunities.

Fantastic experience and pure luxury. Stayed in main lodge area in beautifully appointed rooms, with a nice lawn and garden outlook. Amazing bush tracks. Food and service also top notch. Would highly recommend Treetops.

This hideaway among a native forest 30 minutes from the hot springs of Rotorua exceeded our already high expectations. The location is beautiful, rain or shine, and the accommodations are spacious with attention to every detail, from the native stone fireplaces to the beautifully polished native wood trim to the multiple picture windows set to highlight the vistas. Visit comes with large breakfasts cooked to order, cocktail hour with canapes, and simple but perfectly cooked dinners from local fish and game, seasoned with herbs gathered from the forest. All range of activities are available, from fishing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding, and archery to trips into town or to nearby lakes for other activities or visits to museums and Maori sites. What we found most amazing, however, was the service--cheerful, welcoming, with no request too difficult. Vanessa and Christian made us feel like welcome friends. Spend at least three days to get the full effect, including a visit to the small, perfect spa and Maori healer Marie Claire. One of few places I truly hated to leave.

It rained the entire time we were at Treetops Lodge - not at all unexpected in July. The beautifully appointed villas were roughly an 8 to 10 minute walk from the main lodge. In daylight this is no problem, however in the dark the trails are dimly lit, steep in many parts and slippery due to the rain. Our first evening we requested a ride to the lodge for dinner as we did not know our way. After dinner we were rushed out into the cold, wet, dark night - we were the only guests on the property. For the remainder of our stay, in the cold drizzle and darkness, rides were not offered and it was made clear to us that it was an imposition. They did however provide nice quality rain jackets.
The manager also made us quite uncomfortable - we were unsure if he was joking or making fun of our accents when serving wine by asking if we wanted "a straw with our wine?" Later at dinner he asked. "Want s'more booze?" He also on occasion asked, "How y'all doin'?" in a forced southern accent. The second evening we overheard him saying the same thing to other guests who were from New Zealand, so we assume he was just attempting to be humorous. (We are from the United States, however do not have southern accents.)
As part of our stay, we had hoped to take advantage of several activities that had been advertised including the wine tutorial, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, archery, clay shooting, fly fishing, Maori Food Trail and Geochaching. Due to the weather and lack of personnel most of the activities were unavailable. We took a hike on our own to Bridal Veil Falls. It was lovely wandering through the rain forest - even in the pouring rain! The only other activity available was a 4wheel drive tour of the property which we enjoyed.

With no other activities available, the duty manger recommended we enjoy the spa. The spa was dark and cold. Dirty towels were left in and around the bins. The hot tub was in fact hot when we opened it up, however it was unappealing as it had a dark slimy foam on the surface. The only towels we could find to use were bath mats. Needless to say, the spa was not what we expected.

The villas were beautiful, spacious and well equipped. We especially liked the lip balm and eye cream provided in the bathrooms. The main lodge was also very well done.

The quality of the food was excellent and the chefs were accommodating of special dietary requests (vegan). However, the manager who served dinner didn't need to comment that "most people eat normal food" when serving our daughter her vegan meal. Breakfast was served by a delightful young lady who was cheerful, engaging and made us feel very welcome.
In the end, we all felt relieved to depart Treetops. A beautiful place with an odd personality.

This was our second trip to Treetops and once again we were blown away by the experience. The property is beautiful and the staff just amazing. Hiking in the rain forest one day for 3 hours and never met another soul.

Room Tip: Stay in one of the cottages that surround the lodge.

We were at Treetops over Christmas.
The lodge is set in beautiful, rolling green, lush country. Our villas had superb views that were very private and extremely dramatic. The villas themselves are lovely. Particularly the bathroom, which are large, with a spa bath, huge shower and lots of nice touches. The bedrooms have separate dressing rooms, and each villa had a large lounge with open fire
The main lodge house is dramatic and luxurious - a combination of hunting lodge and English country blouse, with billiards room, library and roaring fires
The food was good and extremely plentiful
Clearly, if you like hunting, this is a great place and for photographers like us, it was lovely too. The walks, especially Bridal Veil Falls are wonderful
A few points to note: the villas are a short (5-10)minute walk through the forest to the main lodge. This is ok in good weather but pretty tricky in pouring rain, and impossible in the dark and rain. The solution is that you are driven back to your room in one of the lodge cars - ok but not ideal. Second, we had two issues specific to our stay. First, the lodge was clearly understaffed at Christmas, resulting in very slow breakfast service on Xmas day and Boxing Day and a bit of a sense of "not quite being on top of things" ( especially compared to where we had just come from, which was Kauri Cliffs). The other issue was that we lost all hot water and heating in both our villas for the last day / night. That resulted in boiling water to wash in and lighting the fires to keep warm - the weather was pouring rain and about 10 degrees. Not absolutely the lodge's fault, as such, but it did put a dampener on events.
It is, however, a spectacular lodge in a spectacular setting.
