We've had a couple of abortive attempts to stay at Treetops but it was certainly worth the wait. We only live an hour away and had been planning a visit for a special occasion - just one night of pure luxury and gourmet food. We've stayed at the best lodges in New Zealand and Treetops can certainly compete. Yes, the approach road is not tar sealed so don't expect to leave with a clean car - okay if you have hired it! We were greeted by John the General Manager and given a guided tour of the property. How I wish I had taken my togs for a dip in the spa pool. I was told they were not necessary but didn't want to scare other guests. We took a walk to the Bridal Veil Falls which were magnificent - walking poles, boots and rain jackets were available to borrow if we required them. There's 70 km of walkways but if that is too much, horses are available - not that we tried them. It was nice to relax in the reception rooms before dinner, moving from one to another, picking up various books, magazines, admiring the paintings or memorabilia in each. Then cocktails in front of the fire. Dinner was exceptional and it was nice to chat to other guests - who had travelled a little further than we had. We had a forest view villa which was beautiful - we did not see the others so could not compare but I am sure they were all of the highest standard. Many thanks to John, Christian, chef Helga and all the staff who made our stay so enjoyable. I could not fault the service.
