“Worth the Wait”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

We've had a couple of abortive attempts to stay at Treetops but it was certainly worth the wait. We only live an hour away and had been planning a visit for a special occasion - just one night of pure luxury and gourmet food. We've stayed at the best lodges in New Zealand and Treetops can certainly compete. Yes, the approach road is not tar sealed so don't expect to leave with a clean car - okay if you have hired it! We were greeted by John the General Manager and given a guided tour of the property. How I wish I had taken my togs for a dip in the spa pool. I was told they were not necessary but didn't want to scare other guests. We took a walk to the Bridal Veil Falls which were magnificent - walking poles, boots and rain jackets were available to borrow if we required them. There's 70 km of walkways but if that is too much, horses are available - not that we tried them. It was nice to relax in the reception rooms before dinner, moving from one to another, picking up various books, magazines, admiring the paintings or memorabilia in each. Then cocktails in front of the fire. Dinner was exceptional and it was nice to chat to other guests - who had travelled a little further than we had. We had a forest view villa which was beautiful - we did not see the others so could not compare but I am sure they were all of the highest standard. Many thanks to John, Christian, chef Helga and all the staff who made our stay so enjoyable. I could not fault the service.

Room Tip: Our villa appeared to be the closest to the main lodge which was very convenient for walking over fo...

We spent our 3 week honeymoon touring the north and south islands. Of all the amazing experiences that we had during our time, Treetops is by far the most memorable. I am still having dreams about it 2 months later.

The property is near Rotorua, which by itself is nothing special (except for Ogo). Tucked away in completely isolation you are sure to have as much privacy as you want. The grounds are impeccable and gorgeous. I went on a trail run around the entire perimeter of the property and it is stunningly pretty. The amount of trophy quality wildlife they have their is amazing. We don't hunt but it was great being able to see the animals up close.

We choose to stay in the lodge during our stay and I would recommend that others do the same unless you are looking for complete privacy. Being in the lodge allows you complete ease in exploring the beautiful building. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. We found we spent little of our time in the rooms, and most of the time in the common areas.

The food is some of the best we have ever had. We regularly dine at Michelin Starred restaurants. Helga and Christian are easily one (if not two) Michelin star caliper chefs. The food they turned out for us was incredible. Every single course was divine. They are truly gifted chefs.

The thing that really sets Treetops apart from other luxury resorts is the service. Every single person we encountered there went out of their way to ensure we were having a pleasant stay. Whether it was the grounds crew, John, Kelsey, Kellum, or James they all made you feel like royalty. I do have to give special recognition to James for making our trip that much better. Whether it was lighting a fire for us prior to our return, going into Rotorua to pick-up movies for us on a rainy day, or picking us out an amazing bottle of wine (his sommelier skills are fantastic) he was always one step ahead in making sure we were completely relaxed and happy.

If/when we return to New Zealand, Treetops will for sure be on our list of destinations.

Room Tip: We preferred to stay in the lodge. If you are looking for completely privacy book a villa.

We've visited Queenstown but Rotorua is a town completely different. Secluded, quiet without the hoopla and attractions that entice and take your time away. Here, time seems to stand still. A pause. At Treetops, you are given so much space and luxury, you just want to be. No striving, no effort. Just listening to the wind seems calming. If you want to do more, then a walk into the wilderness uncovers foliage uniquely New Zealand. See glow worms in the nearby cave. Take a horse-back ride into the vast property with Diddy. Go down to the lake and paddle a canoe. And if you get really bored, go hunting. But the crowning jewel at this resort, is the gourmet food that flow from the open kitchen. Breakfast is made to order, and dinner is a full menu made with local flavors and meats. Exceptional! The whole resort is intimate as a home yet professional and accommodating to make you feel like royalty. These are pleasure you can pay for.

How does one adequately describe Treetops without sounding like a paid endorser? I don't know, because everything about our stay was perfect so superlatives are the order of the day. As you drive up the unpaved road leading to the entrance you get a false sense of disappointment because off in the distance you see a few simple wooden buildings but, as it turns out, they are not the lodge. Instead you drive another 1/2 mile or so up the mountain and deep into the forest to come upon a stone and wood building almost completely hidden by the natural surroundings. Through the massive double wooden doors lies one of the most perfectly designed and decorated lodges found anywhere in the world. The great room is truly "great' with a huge "walk-in" size fireplace, massive custom made tree-truck table, comfortable furnishings, original artwork and fine decode.

John, the resort's manager, gave us a warm greeting and personally made sure the staff took care of our every need during our 3-night stay. The food was world class as was their wine list. Our accommodations (we stayed in one of the private villas) were spacious, nicely appointed and very, very comfortable - a perfect blend of first class luxury in a rustic setting.

If you are looking for a "vacation in the woods" but like first class accommodations look no further Treetops is the place. We've stayed at some of the best resorts and hotels throughout the world and Treetops ranks right up there with them.

I had a surprise night at Treetops in June - and loved it! We were greeted by James, who simply went above and beyond the call of duty the entire time we were there. What I loved about Treetops was that you felt special, the service superb but you somehow still felt 'home away from home' and not smothered. Infact we were so impressed we've already booked our return. The food was very good, nothing was too much of a hassle. We were given a packed lunch to take on our stroll to the waterfall, which was lovely. The scenery beautiful! James kindly showed us around the newly built spa, which looks fantastic. I can't wait to try it out next time.
Many thanks to James for making our night at Treetops very special. He is a true asset to the establishment - 11/10 professional.
