Owner description: The largest of a dozen lakes formed by volcanic activity, this clear, calm lake offers cruises, kayaking and sailing, as well as great trout fishing.

Just lacks life and vitality. No activities on the lake, very disappointed. No cafes/bars close that you can sit and look at he view

See it from land air or water. Helicopters and seaplanes on waterfont along side tour boats and restaurant. Go out to the island for a beautiful and cultural experience.

This was early into our New Zealand trip. There is a good path in the Government Gardens which takes you along the edge of the lake. It is really good for birdwatchers and I learned and found lots of new birds. Four types of Shag/Cormorant in one tree has to be some sort of a record.

The lake is large and beautiful and there is evidence of geo thermal springs in the town including the sulphur smell which is there all of the time. The cable car is worth a ride with a great view at the top, we took an easy drive to the buried village and followed the road a few kms further to a beautiful lake where there is a little cafe and a scenic view, well worth the visit.

Rotorua itself is OK there is basically a main pedestrianised street of cafes and restaurants and a park on the lake front, it seems set up to cater to the back pack community. We spent 2 nights at the Novotel next to the lake, and I think one night in the area would have been enough before moving on to a 'must do' visit to the geo thermal attractions south of Rotorua on the hours drive down to beautiful lake Taupo. By choice I would have spent my time in Taupo.
