Owner description: The largest of a dozen lakes formed by volcanic activity, this clear, calm lake offers cruises, kayaking and sailing, as well as great trout fishing.

The lake is large and beautiful and there is evidence of geo thermal springs in the town including the sulphur smell which is there all of the time. The cable car is worth a ride with a great view at the top, we took an easy drive to the buried village and followed the road a few kms further to a beautiful lake where there is a little cafe and a scenic view, well worth the visit.

Rotorua itself is OK there is basically a main pedestrianised street of cafes and restaurants and a park on the lake front, it seems set up to cater to the back pack community. We spent 2 nights at the Novotel next to the lake, and I think one night in the area would have been enough before moving on to a 'must do' visit to the geo thermal attractions south of Rotorua on the hours drive down to beautiful lake Taupo. By choice I would have spent my time in Taupo.

After the 3 hour drive from Auckland this was a beautiful surprise, and much nicer than the town of Rotoroa. They offer among other sensations a float plane rdie but my companions were not up to it.

Terrific fishing and good times. This was our first visit to the area and we were very impressed with this area. Lake Rotorua was good fun and we will be returning.

Beautiful views allround the lake, lovely walks here and there including up the streams flowing into it, sandy beaches and playgrounds all the way round, georgous island in the middle "Mokoia" which is a unique bird sanctuary and the trout fishing is second to none.... All this and 5 mins away couldnt ask for more

The lake edge is gorgeous, you can do many excursions and quite a few things from paddle boat to kayak, a cruise too. But really impressive are the Jet Boat tours and the scenic floatplane and helicopter rides!
