“Fascinating - but the smell...!”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

Like nothing I've ever seen: the colours, the deep vents, the lakes and streams filled with the most noxious-looking water imaginable.

The smell is rather appalling which is hardly surprising when one reads the information on what's spewed out from the bowels of the earth here - sulphur is just one of the ingredients.

“Amazing sight to be seen”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We arrived in time to see the geyser erupt however we felt this was a little disappointing, quite commercial. However on walking around the mud pools and everything else we were very impressed. If you can hold your noise for long enough you will be wowed by the steam, the colours, the bubbling and gurgling like something from the never ending story.

“Slightly Disappointing”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We went there to see the Lady Knox Geyser as well as other thermal attractions. The geyser was a bit disappointing. It is supposed to "erupt" every day at 10:15am we got there early and walked around the thermal part then drove to the Lady Knox Geyser and waited and waited. Finally at about 10:30am a staff member arrived and gave a brief blurb before putting soap powder into the geyser to make it "erupt". While the actual eruption was good it wasn't quite what we were expecting and seemed fake.

“Yellowstone-Light?”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

Wai-o-tapu is worthwhile, but much less so for someone who has visited Yellowstone. We enjoyed our walk among the thermal features, but it really was like revisiting a very small part of Yellowstone. Oddly, Wai-o-tapu has one of the best gift shops we have ever encountered in a commercial tourist attraction. All these places have gift shops, of course, but they almost invariably stock 90% junk. And, the rare exceptions are typically shops that sell ultra-expensive items. This gift shop is unique; it stocks quality --mostly local -- merchandise, most of which is reasonably priced. Big surprise!

“Great day out even in the rain!”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

We did all the walks and thoroughly enjoyed it even though it rained a lot! Make sure you allow time to buy ticket and drive short distance to see geyser, we hadn't realised the geyser was at a different site so we cut it fine. We found the whole thing fascinating. A must do in that area.
