“It's as good inside as out”

This spectacular building is also a spectacular museum. The history of the baths is fascinating as is the display. It looked more like masochism than pleasure to take a health cure there! A comprehensive Maori exhibit is a must visit, but it really needs to savoured slowly. Spread your visit over 2 days if possible (it doesn't cost any more) - there is simply too much to see in one day without suffering burnout!

“Very interesting”
Reviewed January 24, 2014

It was an interesting museum I did think it was a bit expensive $45 for a family of 4. The 20 minute film we watched was very good and one worth watching.

“A Cultural Gem”
Reviewed January 22, 2014 via mobile

The building was erected over 100 years ago as the premier Spa in the Pacific. It fell into neglect after WW2 but has now been restored as a museum which combines a comprehensive Maori section with a history of the region and the building itself.
Start with the 20 minute film show which tells the story of the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. It's like an old fashioned B movie which is so corny you actually enjoy it. Beware of the earthquakes though.
The old bathhouse has been restored and is well worth a look but the must see is the modern wing dedicated to Maori history.
We were shown around by an excellent guide and I would recommend you use one. There is so much of interest that without help you are sure to miss something.

“Good visit and take time for the free tour”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

Good museum to visit and take the one hour tour led by local's who love their museum and city. We would recommend this stop to anyone for the value we received from it. Make sure you get up to the top to see the view.

“Fantastic Museum”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

We spent an afternoon at the Museum on our recent trip to Rotorua.

While a little bit pricey ($20 per adult I think), the exhibitions were excellent. In particular we enjoyed the gallery on the history of Rotorua, and the exhibition on the old baths that the building use to be.

Don't miss the cinema with a movie on the regions history.

Text was written clearly and in a large font which made it easy to read the articles.
