Owner description: This place is temporarily closed due to a natural disaster. Rotorua Museum is currently closed for earthquake strengthening. In the meantime Rotorua Museum is running a limited programme of exhibitions, events and education programmes in other venues around Rotorua. We also run free twice-daily tours (11am & 2pm) in Government Gardens - including the history of the buildings, battles and historical sites around the gardens, the sculpture trail, and the ongoing programme that has seen the release of several endangered New Zealand falcons into the gardens.

Two topics we learned about were the endeavours of the Maori battalion in WWII and the start of tourism . The short film on the Maori was excellent in telling the stories of various individuals and their families. As a reminder of the horrors of war no one should miss this. The building was originally a Bath House; mud baths for therapeutic purposes. A failed attempt at tourism but still a success in the long run as it drew attention to Rotorua.

Loved the Maori history section and ghost tour! The view from the roof was awesome too!
We found the information in the eruption movie fascinating too.

We did the Rotorua Museum Tour with a tour guide. We found it fascinating and very informative to learn about the history of the Maori coming to NZ, the cinema was very good. We spent about 2 hours there and also enjoyed the tour of the thermal baths. Very friendly staff.

The tour and cinema reel was amazing. There was an earthquake exhibition on when ther. So informative and slightly disconcerting. But definitely worth the entry fee.
We couldn't cover everything in one visit, so they let us visit again a few days later at no charge. Thats service

Our visit to Rotorua Museum was excellent. Highly recommend you visit. The interactive earthquake display was amazing and almost scary. The building was once a spa bath house and the remains of the baths and the workings are still visible. The surrounding gardens are a pleasure. We arrived late afternoon and soon realised that we should have gone much earlier as there was a lot to see.
