The story of the volcanic eruption and burial of many small Maori villages in 1886 is both tragic and interesting. The site of Te Wairoa provides a good insight into what life must have been like around the time of the eruption. It would take just under 2 hours to see everything. Our only complaint is the price.

We are pleased you gained a good insight into history of the Tarawera eruption by visiting the Buried Village. The Buried Village is a private business. The admission fees are used to maintain the facilities, to fund further developments and to cover staff costs. Thank you for your visit and feedback.

Excellent place to visit. Good to be able to walk around the village and picture how it was and what happened. The waterfalls are stunning.

We thought we will do a quick stop here but it turned out to be very interesting. Museum and guide - very informative. The hike was very pretty with waterfalls.

Really enjoyed this. I liked the element of the notes written from the perspective of Margaret all around. Gave a different feel and understanding to what happened. It’s so sad and we’re so lucky that they were able to find any remaining objects. The waterfall walk amazing. Steep steps but not very long, and totally worth it. The water is so clear and gorgeous.

Margaret was a Victorian tourist who came to Te Wairoa on her journey to the Pink & White Terraces. In her letters to family and friends she describes the village life and her visit to the terraces. It is indeed an interesting perspective from a visitor's point of view. We are pleased you enjoyed the whole Buried Village experience and thank you for your commending review.

We enjoyed a quiet walk through this village that was buried during the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. Gorgeous property that is well maintained. Informative signs everywhere and lots to see. Turns out we're related to the hotel owner who saved a lot of people that night!

That must have been a special moment to discover you are related to Joseph McRae. He was presented with a Gold Cross by the St. John's Ambulance Association for bravery during the night of the eruption. We are glad you enjoyed your visit to the Buried Village and thank you for the review.
