“Rainy Day Visit”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

Spent an enjoyable afternoon in both the museum and village exploring the story of this incredible event. The museum is well planned and highly informative with a lot to look at and discover. However you can get a good overview of the events without having to read every detail. The village is a lovely walk even though it was pouring rain the day we were there. The reward for walking in the rain was the spectacular sight at the base of the waterfall. It was well worth the effort!! We had afternoon tea in the café but unfortunately they had run out of the spectacular scones I had noticed on the way in. My advice is to pre-order some before you go in if you are there later in the day. As we were there in heavy rain some of the paths were very wet so good footwear was essential!!

Thank you for the great response. I am glad your braved it in the rain, as it is a truly unique place to visit. Agreed the Museum of Te Wairoa provides interesting exhibits from the early settlers to the aftermath of the eruption. Oh sorry to hear you missed out on the scones but i am sure there was other goodies, such as our yummy slices! Yes be prepared for adverse weather- good footwear, warm clothes, and wet weather jacket essential in the winter!

“Great waterfall but not that much else to see”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

A local museum on an important historic site, interesting but it is expensive considering what there is to see. My pre teens & teens did not find it that interesting unfortunately.

Helpful staff - and a lovely walk to the waterfall which is the best part by far.

Thanks for taking your time in reviewing the Buried Village. That is a shame your pre teens & teenagers did not find it interesting. If you are not in to history - then this might not be the place for you! A lot of reading involved in the museum, and archaeological site; however great sites to see as well with excavated objects, and excavated sites. I am glad you enjoyed the Waterfall Trail - the Wairere Falls is such a beauty and great way to end the tour of the village. I will pass this onto the staff, they will be pleased!

“Sunny Day Out”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

Awesome experience right from before you open the door when you are greeted by an elderly gentleman who gives you a short rundown of the story of how the village got buried. A great museum of history of the eruption then a lovely walk through the excavated houses. Considering that so many lives were lost in this area, it is surprisingly peaceful to walk through. A very informative place to enrich peoples lives. There is an option of walking down to see the waterfall, an extra 15 minutes, which at this particular time we did not do, but is well worth the extra time if you have it.
