good to see the devastating effects of volcanic eruptions on what was once a thriving village popular bathing area. was probably expecting more after driving out here. good look around and did love the commentary from the ipods...take the waterfall way you wont be disappointed with the view...just a little out of puff

My favourite part of this experience was the drive to see the view of mt tarawera and lake tarawera, just outside where the buried village is situated. It would be better if somehow you could see these in the buried village itself. I did enjoy the stories and the walk around the buried village, although I did feel that every exhibit showed the same thing and that the stories were repeated a lot along the trail. The walk to the waterfall is completely worth it and the museum is very interesting. I did enjoy the time I had here but felt maybe it was a little overpriced.

It's hard to really say anything bad about something that calls itself the buried villiage because you sort of expect everything to be buried but I do think that it is expensive for not a huge amount. The guide is great very informative and you so sort of get an idea of what they are saying but to be honest you don't see anything that makes the $32pp worth while. That said if you like a walk with a nice waterfall it is the place to go. The cream teas are a kiwi take on an English favourite and the cream is sort of foamy not clotted cream or even an approximation there of.

What a great little place to learn about the village of Te Wairoa, and the history of the surrounding area before and after the eruption of Mt Tarawera. The guided tour on the iPod was a great help with little bits of interesting facts from Thomas Smith, which really enhanced the experience of the visit. The waterfall is a must-see, and well worth the extra walk. We really enjoyed our time there, and would recommend it to anyone who loves learning a bit of history on their holiday.

Excellent tour and explanation by Lyn, our expert tour guide! The terror that defined the volcanic explosions that fateful night is fully explained from both an emaotional impact particularly for the local Maori and also the scientific basis for the eruptions. Will always be on my favourites list. Highly recommended.
