Had a really good tour guide on the walk called Lyn, she was really good, really informative and obviously cared about the site.
Best part for me was the waterfall trail which is definitely worth a look.

I was apprehensive about this visit (not my pick) but I shouldn't have worried.
This attraction has a small but quality museum at the begining (in hindsight I feel the museum would be more benefit at the end of the walk), the walk then winds its way thru different areas of the village that was damaged or destroyed by the 1886 earthquakes & volcanic eruption.
all the sites are numbered & admission price includes an interactive ipod that tells a story about each site.
The track around the burried village is level & easy to walk apart from the walk to the waterfall.
I found the walk along the crystal clear creek to be quiet magical & it made my day to see a trout swimming along this. I also found that the waterfall was very worth the steep stairs down to it.
the cafe was really cosy & although I can't recommend the coffee here - the scones & jam did look good.

If you are looking to go somewhere and learn some history, this is a great place, explains about the big volcano that ruined the whole village, very good!!

Very peaceful to walk here but quite emotional to think of the sadness and tragedy that had occurred so many years before. Well laid out and sign posted.

A wet cold day did colour our experience a bit, but the warmth and friendliness of the staff and Guide Lyn made up for that. The guided tour was very informative and helped us understand the history of the event and its impact on the lives of the local people.

The respectful manner in which the site is being excavated greatly impressed us.

We thoroughly appreciated the museum's detailed information of the events of the eruption, and impact on the local communities.

We did the guided tour first, then continued the walk through the whole area. One of us did the extension walk down to the waterfall and the other did the easier, quicker route back to the cafe! After a good lunch we spent more time in the museum, then did a second round of the village and upper walk. This gave us opportunity for more photos and an even better appreciation of the village.

Thanks Clive and Pippa for your review which truly sums up everything that the Buried Village has to offer. Our guides are extremely knowledgeable and enjoy sharing the stories of Tarawera and the Terraces with our visitors. Fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your time with us, and that after fuelling up in the cafe , you did a second round of the park.
