Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. This was a really interesting place, particularly the museum.
In Feb 2013 I was given an iPod/iPhone and let loose. I think a guided tour within the village is a great idea. Without a guide the village part of the experience was pretty average.
I now read they have a guided tour.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on your February visit, and I am sorry you were unable to experience a guided tour while you were here. Our guided tours leave at set times throughout the day and we generally offer the I-pods as an alternative if you are visiting outside of our tour times. We get great feedback from both, so hope you can visit us again in the future and join one of our tours.

if you want to know about the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886 then you must go here. they have so much info set out in an interesting way in their museum room.
The walk around the grounds is great and has been improved with the addition of info boards and historical stories.
Look for trout in the stream ! make sure you walk down to the waterfall and get a photo in front of it !

Loved the way our tour guide Lyn was dressed and she was so knowledgable and friendly. She greeted us at the Entrance before the Tour even started and began talking to us as if she had known us for a long time. The staff in the Teahouse were also very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this tour.

Overall a good experience. Helpful staff who gave us an iPod to guide us around the site. There are good interpretive panels as well. The museum at the start of the site is excellent and really gives you a perspective of the events that befell the village and the Terraces. There is also a short walk that takes you to the waterfall, well worth doing. Allow sufficient time for your visit as there is plenty to see.

Tip: Pick up a "Jasons Guide to Rotorua" before you go and use the voucher for a free memory stick with photos, videos of the Buried Village.

We recently visited The Buried Village and really enjoyed our visit. The museum and grounds were fascinating and well presented. It gave us a really good understanding of the history and layout of the Rotorua area. We loved having our own iPod touch to guide us around the village at our own pace. My kids also really enjoyed the walk to the waterfall (optional but worth it as long as you don't mind heights and stairs!) The family pass of $40 (one adult and 2 kids aged 9 and 13) was really good value for money for a lovely afternoon.

Thank you for your feedback. It is so nice to hear that you and your children enjoyed your afternoon with us. The i-pods have certainly been a great addition to our attraction this summer.
