Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. “Buries Village”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

This was very expensive for what it was at $32 NZD each. Only a small museum the village wasn't anything to look at , the guide (if you choose one) was young and only basically informed but it ws interesting. The highlight was the waterfall. The steps down and back up were very steep but well worth it. easily spent 1 and a half hours there.

“Gone past its used by Date”

While the museum at this place is fantastic (which could be transported and displayed in Rotorua central) the walk through the village is an absolute nothing. Its just like a stroll in the park, the buried sites are a nothing, tacky with very little to look at. Even the view towards the end of the walk is getting crowed out with native trees, cut some of them down and at least we could see the view. The popular trees which were fence posts which were a highlight of this attraction have been cut down and not been replaced withanything. Overpriced and not worth the drive there.

Sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to the Buried Village. The archeological sites are the actual sites of the Whares, Homes and the Hotel that once stood at Te Wairoa village. The displays at each site showcase objects that were excavated and give an insight to the way of life in the 1800's and also show the devastation that was caused by the eruption of Mount Tarawera. The trees towards the end of the trail are on Department of Conservation Land and are not part of the Buried Village property, however there are many stunning views to be taken in onsite of the valley and lake and visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Tarawera at the lookout 500m up the road. Unfortunately we did have to remove the poplar trees earlier in the year due to safety reason although since then we have planted over a 100 native trees onsite.

“Well worth a visit!”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

A short but scenic drive from Rotorua the Buried Village tells of what must have been a bizarre and terrifying experience for the villagers of the time - my UK visitors (and I, a kiwi first timer) very much enjoyed wandering around the various buildings and excavations, guided on iPod touch screens by Thomas, who was entertaining and informative. Friendly, helpful staff. Highly recommend doing the beautiful bush / waterfall walk if you are able....and enjoying a flat white and a muffin in the cafe afterwards!

“Great insight and excellent with ipod self-guide”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

really informative, the new muesum part (I visited over 10 years ago) is great and the ipod we were given was excellent - not too long to listen to but clear and informative. We had a beautiful day and did the waterfall walk (it is steep). The staff at the counter were excellent - explained everything thoroughly and accurately and made for a good visit

“Another “Must See” attraction”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

What an amazing story!

A story of courage and survival all pre-1900’s.

The respect that the operators have shown to preserving this attraction for the future is truly inspiring. Spend some time in the museum first and read as much of the stories as you can then take the tour.

You are supplied with an iPod Touch with a guided tour loaded – this is included in your entry fee and was very informative.

Take the walk to the falls – it is worth it (it is not as long as they say, but spectacular).
