Owner description: Experience New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption come to life! Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. Today at the Buried Village encounter the world class Museum of Te Wairoa, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, experience the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Wairere Falls.

“Historic Wonderland”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

Recently went to Te Wairoa Buried Village. Most impressed with the facility. I felt it was a little eerie. So sad to read about people's experiences and the fear and helplessness they must have felt. The talking ipad was a novel and informative tour guide and reception staff were most helpful. Museum a highlight, and the waterfall walk was stunning. A leisurely afternoon with great facilities.

Facinating place but what really surprised us was the walk to the waterfall absolutely gorgeous. Followed by devonshire tea, beautiful day.

Gives a great perspective of the damage of recent eruptions and installs respect for the volcanic forces lying dormant around the area.

“3 & 6 years old a bit too young”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

I loved the Buried Village when I was young so couldn't wait to take my two there but they got bored really easily and we raced through in under an hour so it didn't feel like a good use of our money compared to some of the other things we did. The cafe is lovely and there is a little park there too so worth the drive out there just for the cafe and park for little ones (and to look at the blue and green lakes on the way). Lovely, helpful people.

“Interesting site....”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

We enjoyed this site. If you're interested in the local history of the volcanic eruption in 1886 then this is a good place to learn. Nice little museum and very friendly staff. Take the guided tour.......you learn more and you can always wander around yourself later if you miss bits.
