Owner description: Experience New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption come to life! Violent and unexpected, the volcanic eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters burying the peaceful village of Te Wairoa and ending more than 150 lives. Today at the Buried Village encounter the world class Museum of Te Wairoa, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, experience the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Wairere Falls.

We enjoyed this site. If you're interested in the local history of the volcanic eruption in 1886 then this is a good place to learn. Nice little museum and very friendly staff. Take the guided tour.......you learn more and you can always wander around yourself later if you miss bits.

“Another not-to-be-missed place!”

Take the guided tour, or wander through on your own, this place is crammed with history as well as beautiful. Whilst the history of the village is sad, the beauty of the place is stunning, and it tells you much about the people, both Maori and Pakeha who originally settled here.

The tearoom is excellent with home-made food - we had a lovely, if very belated lunch here. Belated because we spent so much time wandering about the area as well as in the museum section.

Once again, the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful.

“Fascinating and Welcoming”

This was history, but entertaining history, and very moving. The Ipod tours are a great help, the layout of the historical exhibits and buildings very user-friendly and the staff enthusiastic and welcoming. The story of the village is tragic and extraordinary and two or three hours at this site is time well spent. Make sure you also finish your trip by walking along to the waterfall. The safety warnings err on the side of caution, and most people will easily be able to cope with the short flight of steepish stairs down to the viewing platform. The village is close to Rotorua and very accessible.
