“A money making venture - no more no less”
Reviewed March 11, 2009

The whole experience was very disappointing from start to finish.

The traditional Maori greeting was poorly managed so that people at the back had little idea of what was happening.

The best part of the evening was the singing and dancing which was performed.

The meal was dreadful. If this was meant to be traditional Maori food – we had no idea they ate pasta, coleslaw and Pavlova !!!! It was more like a works canteen than a traditional Maori feast.

As mentioned elsewhere, the mediocre wine was extremely expensive.

After the meal there was a sing song which was cringingly awful.

The return to the hotel was a nightmare with the coach driver going round and round roundabouts while singing “she’ll be coming round the mountain”

Having read some good reports about Hangi on Trip Advisor, we were looking forward to the evening but we came away feeling well and truly taken for a ride.

“Excellent experience”
Reviewed November 30, 2008

Went to Tamaki Village at the end of October. In one evening, we had a thorough introduction to the traditions, housing, clothing, food and music of Maori people. Wandering through the village brought explanations from Maoris at each house about traditions and activities. Could not have got this from a book.

“Great Show”
Reviewed July 13, 2008

Great show of Maori culture. Highly entertaining peformers, accompanied by a nice dinner. Good value for your money. Only downside occurred on the bus trip back to the motel, when a opossum ran under the bus and derailed the brake system! Gave the opossum a zero for that one.

“An experience that even Kiwis would be proud of”
Reviewed May 21, 2008

As Kiwis with regular visitors of friends and family from overseas, we are always wanting to ensure that they have a great experience and enjoy as much of the 'real NZ' as possible. While the obligatory trip to Rotorua is normally on the agenda, we were interested in a recommendation made by friends about Tamaki Maori Village. While the price of $95.00 adult/$55.00 child (which included entry into an additional nominated attraction) was expensive for our party of 8 when we only wanted a dinner and show, we took a deep breath and hoped that we wouldn't be disappointed. We most certainly were not disappointed and were very impressed. Clearly it is a venture that needs to be commercial, but they are able to combine the sometimes contradictory elements of sleek and polished presentation with authenticity and dignified portrayal of Maori culture. A very unique experience that would rival anything in the world.
