Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

“Interesting & enjoyable night out”
Reviewed April 11, 2014

First things first, our coach driver was amazing. Probably the most incredible personality we meet during our stay in NZ. Unfortunately I can't remember his name as our visit was last year. Very friendly, kind and knowledgable. Some how he managed to remember everyones name who was on his coach, 30+ quite impressive!

The whole experience from start to finish ran very smoothly and professionally. Getting involved with the Maori culture and activities was interesting and fun as participation is encouraged, especially the Haka! Even though it is a 'tourist attraction', the respect and passion shown by the Maori people was genuine and they are very clearly proud of their heritage and willing to share it.

After a display of traditional dancing and singing we were treated to a Hangi. Having been shown earlier in the evening how it is prepared it was nice to taste the final outcome. The food was plentiful and tasty.

A very informative and enjoyable evening, well worth the price.

“Excellent experience!”

Throughly enjoyed an evening doing the Tamaki Maori Village tour. Great team passionate about sharing their culture with everybody. We all had a lot of fun while learning and understanding the Maori culture.

Dinner was superb with generous servings of food, followed by lots of music-making. Great time!

“Excellent fun night out”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

Had a great night at this Maori cultural event. We were picked up from our accomodation in a small minibus and taken to central Rotoruan where we boarded a large coach. On our 15 to 20 minute journey to Tamaki the driver kept us amused with stories and information about the evening.

Once we arrived at Tamaki we were formally welcomed by the Maori chief and allowed to enter the village. The Maori men and women then displayed some of their traditional crafts and cultures (including the Haka), they were obviously very proud of their heritage. We were treated to more entertainment with song, dance and stories.
The finale was a lovely buffet meal with labb, chicken, fish and vegetables, all cooked in hangi. This was followed by more singing where everybody was encouraged to join in.

A great night out - Kia ora
