Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

Although at first it seemed very real with the bus driver saying we must be very careful not to offend the villagers, the Tamaki Maoris themselves began to make jokes of the cultural traditions. This broke the vibe of experiencing real Maori village traditions. Truth be told, the Hangi meal was very good, but this did not compensate for what seemed to be inauthenticity. Overall it was fun, but I wouldn't call it educational or a solid cultural experience.

Bus ride out was a hoot with the driver starting our Maori education the moment we got on board. He was just as much fun on the way home.
Village setup like an old village would have been was quite well done with an explanation of many facets of Maori life and staff very willing to answer all questions and allow photos etc.
Show was good as was the food and general atmosphere which was enjoyed by all

My husband and I had a wonderful time. We learned a lot about the Maori in a fun and entertaining way. Everyone made sure that we had a good time. The traditional food was delicious and plentiful. Every part of our evening was excellent and we hated to see it end.

My husband and I enjoyed the whole event - everything from Dennis the entertaining bus driver, to the cultural displays which required guest participation, to a delicious hangi meal. The meats and veggies were perfectly cooked and the homemade pavlova and steamed toffee pudding were amongst the best I've ever tasted. Everyone in our group seemed to have a great experience and we highly recommend it.

This was such an amazing experience. It really gives insight into the Maori culture. We rode on a bus, and the bus driver was so interactive and funny--even the ride was fun! There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and participate, and the Hangi (the food) was delicious! Take as many pictures as you can. You'll want to remember this forever.
