Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

I generally dont like such kind of tourist traps but I have to say that it has been a very nice experience. The athmosphere was nice, our bus driver Aroa was hilarious, the shows and the explanations were well done and the food cooked under the soil was very nice. I have appreciatee the absence of cross selling activities and the availability of the staff to pose for pictures and to provide further explanations.

This is definitely not to be missed. Our bus driver was a character - Haru. He made you feel welcome and made you laugh. They put on such a wonderful show with educational, hands on and cultural values. Very entertaining and to end the night they cook a hangi for kai. And set this in a large dining area in which they make everyone feel welcome and with such a friendly family atmosphere. The bus drivers then do a little karaoke with traditional Maori song and other songs.
Such an awesome cultural experience. Not to be missed and never forgotten. :)

wow is all I can say, I am a kiwi who has lived away from nz for sometime, I took a friend from
overseas to see this and what an experience, well worth it, from the driver Darren, who was so
funny,to the meal , the performance which brought a tear to my eyes, and their demonstrations in the native forest, excellent, we were even picked up and dropped off from our hotel..

From the time they pick you up till they drop you back, these guys go out of their way to ensure that you are fully engaged, kept entertained and educated about the local culture. They put up quite a show on entry and then on things go like clockwork. The crowd is cleverly divided into batches and they are taken to different spots to avoid crowding around the same place. The high light is the Handi (traditional cooking) which is served for dinner and the song and dance program. The program is a careful blend of culture and humour and there was never a dull moment. On the complaints side we had to wait about 40 minutes at the venue for the other bus load of travellers, which was time wasted. Also it started raining and they did not give us any umbrellas or raincoats despite requests (and they did have a few extras).

As a Maori, we rarely see such a well organised, entertaining and authentic experience of Maori culture. Can't recommend it highly enough. Our coach driver, Cairo, was brilliant with a diverse group. Ka nui te pai! Richard from Australia.
