Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

My husband and I had a very memorable cultural evening learning about the Maori culture and enjoying a Hangi feast. We were picked up by Darren in the Tamaki bus and driven out to the village. Whilst in the bus Darren started to tell us some history and how to say hello Kiora in Maori we then elected a chief and I think this bloke was in for an exciting evening. We met some beautiful people from this village they spoke with such love and respect towards each other and Europeans that their ancestors encountered. The performance was outstanding and the dinner most delicious, but I must say the Aussie pavlova is much nicer than the NZ one I like the crust around our pav's.... Thanks to everyone at the Tamaki village keep up the great work the world could learn from your culture hey!

This is a first class experience. Logistically, everything is extremely well organised so the whole trip runs really smoothly. More importantly though, the Tamaki staff (they don't feel like staff, more like a host family) are all so hospitable, helpful, knowledgeable, and SO talented! The bus journey was great, our driver Aroha was hilarious and we loved how interactive she made the experience, from the rowing of our Waka to the awesome singing. We learnt so many interesting things about traditional Maori culture, and we got to try our hand at a few of the skills and games as well. The final performance is amazing so make sure you have your camera ready. And of course there is the Hangi meal. This is served in a buffet style after you see it lifted from the earth cooker- it is pretty delicious (also there is wine, beer, and cocktails on sale which go down a treat). All in all, very impressed and definitely recommend taking advantage of this unique cultural experience while you are in Rotorua.

We joined the evening tour at the last minute having only just arrived in Rotorua. The bus driver was a great character. I enjoyed the welcome ceremony and going round the houses in the village learning about Maori customs. I also enjoyed the Maori performance.

The dinner was good. I was sorry we were not invited to go for a second helping as there was a lot of food left over. It is always difficult to know how much to take at a buffet.

I would have liked to know a bit more about Maori history and how Maoris have lived alongside Europeans .

But overall good and I would recommend to others visiting Rotorua.

Really enjoyed our experience even though it was touristy. Sat next to a New Zealand family while eating the lovely food and learnt about the area from them. Even in the rain it was fun and the coach driver was cheerful and a great entertainer.
