Owner description: Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

This is well worth the money - particularly when you count the number of people involved in putting together the experience from the driver through to performers to cooks and wait staff. I
We'd been to the museum before and got one perspective of Maori culture - the Tamiki village evening added another layer to the appreciation of culture. Of course it's staged - but to the critics: wouldn't you rather have the professionalism and attention to detail with the depiction of culture than a fumbling display that embarrasses everyone?
This was warm, friendly and welcoming from the moment we were picked up at the hotel until we were dropped off again.
My only criticism? Tamiki family - pavlova is Australian ( might as well contribute my mite to the rivalry)
Highly recommended.

What a way to learn about the Maori culture and traditions. The tour is well organized and the guide was very good. On the way to the village the guide explained to us what to expect when we enter the village and an outline of what to expect. It was fun choosing the chief on our bus and I must say he was the best chief that evening. The initial welcome ceremony was really great and so was the information given at each village hut. You get to take part in some of the activities and everyone enjoyed themselves. The highlight was the cultural show and I really fell in love with the Maori music. The food was good too and so was the singing to close off the evening. On the way back the guide wanted us to sing a song from the country we came from and we had so much fun signing along.
A must see in NZ
Kia Ora

Anyone visiting the Rotorua area should be sure to come and check Tamaki out. They teach you about the Maori traditions, have activities that you can get involved in, they have singing and performances including the Haka and finally they lay on an amazing feast to round off the evening. It is quite expensive at 110 per person, but as i am staying in Crank Backpackers I was able to get a ticket for 88 once I booked it through the backpackers.
There were people of all ages there, from babies to the elderly and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. The staff are great and even though we were watching what would have been their third performance of the night they were full of enthusiasm and really brought the show to life.
The feast was amazing too, although it did feel a little bit rushed as they put dessert out 5-10 mins after mains were served. We left with a full an satisfied stomach, and a feeling that the whole evening was definately money well spent.

Four of us went on the evening cultural and hangi experience, two of us Kiwis hosting two from overseas. I'm quite familiar with Maori culture already but I really enjoyed this evening. It is a very intelligent package, delivered with style and warmth, NOT just hustling tourists through and grabbing their money. We were picked up from our motel at the exact time they said, and taken care of. The bus driver was also one of the main hosts and really exhibited manaakitanga. I liked the way they presented the cultural pre-dinner aspects - I am a teacher and they used excellent pedagogical methodology to present the culture and involve the visitors. The meal was simple but delicious and we didn't go hungry. The ride home was fun too - Kia ora e Kahu.
