“Great Location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2010

We stayed 3 nights at the Novotel Lakeside and were mainly disappointed in the cleanliness of our room. The bath/shower drain had not been cleaned for a very long time and hair had accumulated around the drain which should have been obvious to the cleaners. The room was a typical Novotel room - fairly roomy and comfortable. The hotel is in an excellent location making it easy to walk into the city and around the lake.

This hotel was a nice stop over, and we really don't have any complaints.

The staff were nice, if a little stiff, and the building was fine, but this hotel is definitely due for a refurb, if only a minor one.

The rooms are nice but again a little dated.

You can smell than rotten egg smell slightly, but that is because they tap into the Geothermal activity that Rotorua is famous for. You rarely smell it, and when you do, it is not overpowering or annoying, just slightly noticeable. I think all of the hotels tap into it for heating.

I would recommend this hotel, it was a comfortable stay.

The best part about this hotel is the location - no need of a car - on the lake, near the park with the free boiling mud & steam, opposite lots of restaurants and not far to a bus.

On the down side, it is urgently in need of room renovations especially the bathroom. Well worth the upgrade to Superior LakeView though, and the views are very nice, and these rooms have ample space.

Second day (after a horrible sleep the first night), about 3pm asked for 2 thick pillows (from the Pillow Menu) - didnt come - then asked again about 9pm - told I was too late, only 1 left in the entire hotel (does that say something for their normal pillows maybe?) BUT if this happens to you, dont fall for it! Insist! Coz at another hotel later on (same hotel chain suspiciously) exactly the same story was spun - hmmm!

Anyway, I guess we would stay here again, purely because of the location (and maybe BYO pillows).

BTW also went to the hotels small Matariki Hangi & Concert - loved the show, not the food. But was good to just want back to your room when over instead of getting on a bus.

My husband and I stayed two nights in the Novotel on a recent stay in Rotorua. We were struck by the location immediately. It is within walking distance of the main town center, with lots of restaurants and a great lakefront within short walking distance.

When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by reception and given keys to our room. While modern and comfortable, some of the decor in the bathroom appeared a bit outdated. The biggest problem we encountered being on one of the top floors was the elevator. The pattern seemed to go continually up, but rarely picked up to go down.

There were restaurants on site, but with the close proximity of everything in town, we didn't use any of the restaurants. As we found with many New Zealand hotels, there was a $10 NZD fee for 2 hours of internet, but they also had a Mac for use for quick emails in the lobby as well should you find yourself needing to do so.

Nonetheless, if we were to return to Rotorua, I wouldn't have a problem staying at the Novotel again and would recommend staying here for those looking for a comfortable stay close to everything Rotorua has to offer.

We stayed at the Novotel Lakeside in mid-February. The hotel is fine - basically clean with adequate rooms - but nothing special. The Novotel marketing department is trying to pass this hotel off as a 4 star+ hotel, but they are dreaming - no way is the hotel that good. Breakfast buffet is OK - but not cheap (26 kiwi dollars) and overall food quality is average. Location is great - very convenient for town, activities, etc & view of the lake is quite nice. Competition in Rotorua is not that stiff, however - most of the other hotels seem to be of similar quality. I hope/imagine that there are better choices in town, but most are small local hotels, so the quality may be uneven. If you want an international choice, you can chose this hotel - just don't expect too much.

Lovely hotel. We upgraded at checkin to lakeview & breakfast for $39 & it was worth it. Novotel breakfast is the best going! Room was v clean & comfortable
The hotel is also right next to a street full of restaurants/cafes which spill out onto the pavements. Most with BYO wine & yes there is a bottle shop :) We'd stay here again no problem.

Stayed here on my birthday and was very happy with hotel. Always a warm greeting when you arrive. Chocolates on the pillow are very welcome after a hard day at the spa!
Room service is prompt. Food was great!
Bed is comfy with a wonderful choice of pillows to suit.
Will stay at this hotel each time I visit Rotorua (nowhere else matches)
