Novotel Rotorua Lakeside
Ranked #19 of 92 Hotels in Rotorua
Reviewed March 27, 2008

Stayed 2 nights at Easter at the Novotel with our 2 young children. Upgraded ourselves to a Lake view room - well worth it with great views of the lake and activities in the park. The hotel is in a great location, in walking distance, close to the lake, shops and restaurants.
Check in was quick, friendly and efficient. The room was spacious with 2 double beds, clean and bright.
The 1st morning, when leaving our room, we saw the housekeeper in the corridor. We told her that we are out for most of the day, so you can clean our room next. She obviously saw that we had 2 young children. Upon returning we noticed that she had given us extra towels, soaps and shampoos - a nice touch.
Our rate included full buffet breakfasts, a wide selection available. I think most guests don't know that you can ask for fried eggs and other items not on the buffet. Staff happily oblige.
Did not eat dinner at the hotel, plenty of restaurants nearby. 1st night we ate at Nando's - great food and service. Also, unlike most Nando's we have eaten at, they service beer and wine. 2nd night at the nearby Thai restaurant - over priced and surly service from manageress.

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Rotorua at the Novotel. We normally stay in motels in Rotorua, but would happily stay at Novotel again.

We spent one night at the Lakeside in early February. Although, we did not have a lake view, we were very happy with the accomodations. The room and bathroom were both very spacious and very clean. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast quite good. We were on a two week tour of New Zealand, by motorcycle, and this was one of the better of the hotels we stayed at. We also enjoyed the show.

Accommodation is to the high standard you would expect from Novotel. Room had great lake views.

Good central location with off street parking.

Reservations and portering seemed a bit disorganised. Although everything was resolved to our satisfaction, we were initially told we couldn't extend our stay by another night, then told we could move to a superior room for our second night, then told we could stay in the original room, but they attempted to charge us for an upgrade! Also, someone else's luggage was in our room when we first arrived.

I spent the 27th of Dec in Rotorua and would have to say I really had no complaints regarding this hotel. It is obvious it has had a major revamp and the rooms were very nice. The location is very central to all the shops and the restaurants ( breakfast at Lime is great which is less then a block from the hotel). I don't think I would go back but I think it has less to do with the hotel then it does with the area. Rotorau has become very commercial and you pay 50 dollars a person to see mud bubble. I really felt that we wasted a valuable day by going there when there are so many other great places to visit in New Zealand.

We stayed two nights here on our recent round-NZ trip. The sulphurous smell of the town permeates the hotel, but that is probably the case of every hotel in his vulcanically active area. It was very conveniently situated. Reception smelt of cooking quite a lot of the time. The check-in was brisk but the promised assistance with our luggage never materialised. The room was clean and spacious, although when we asked for fresh milk in the room (as was offered) it did not arrive. A pleasant view of the lake. This is a good place to stay in Rotorua if you don't want character or atmosphere but who's going to be hanging around in the hotel with so much to do locally? Recommended.

Visited Rotorua while on our Honeymoon through New Zealand.

Room: well done, clean. had a lakeview room.

Location: excellent, easy to walk to some nice restaurants. Only 15 minutes from airport. Short walk to the lake.

Staff: courteous, met our expectations. The front desk staff were kind enough to help us arrange/call for activities, give options for restaurants, etc.

Bottom Line: solid hotel at a reasonable price. should not be disappointed.
