Millennium Hotel Rotorua
Ranked #23 of 92 Hotels in Rotorua
Reviewed August 29, 2006

We stayed at the Millenium Hotel Rotorua for 2 nights. The staff were probably the best part as they were very friendly.

The rooms seemed to be recently upgraded. Although comfortable, definitely not in the 4.5 star plus category. The rooms were small and not very spacious. The bathroom was disappointing with an open shower where the water did not drain out properly. It meant that the whole bathroom ended up being wet! Further the showers would not stay at one temperature and had poor water pressure.

We found the worst part of our stay was a loud noise which turned out to be the elevator going up and down. It may have just been where our room was located but we did not think this was acceptable for a Millenium Hotel.

We had breakfast at the hotel on one morning. The breakfast was also not up to scratch with food that looked like it had been sitting there for a couple of days.

Overall I would say that the hotel is comfortable and a close walk to local attractions but would probably not stay there again.

Rotorua is often called Rotovegas by the Kiwis because of the tourist orientation of the city. It actually reminded me of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Lots of small hotels and gift shops.
The Millenium Hotel is part of a New Zealand chain. The room was clean and comfortable. Beds are OK. The only negative is that this three story hotel sprawls over an entire city block. It was a long walk to the room from the reception area with all of our luggage. The city of Rotorua is located amid volcanic steam vents and so there is a distinct smell of sulpher in the city. Fortunately, there was little smell that crept into the hotel room.

Been a while seen I stayed here, Dec 2003, but if it hasn't changed it is wonderful. Very relaxing atmosphere right from when you check in. The bar area is nice and the Polynesian Spa next door is just amazing. So much so that two out of our three nights we went there, sitting in those natural hot springs til the sun goes down is just something else.
Plenty to see around and outside of Rorotua, the volcanic activity is just awesome if not a little scary! Waimangu Geothermal Valley is a must.

We stayed for 2 nights in mid April. The hotel location is excellent. You can walk to many restaurants, shops and a supermarket. It is very close do the Polynesian Pools. Our room faced the pools on the right and looked directly on the lake.

The room is very nicely furnished. I think they must have done a remodel recently because the 2 photos on this web site are very different than our room (check the hotel web site - the room looked like their pics). The bathroom was all marble. I do agree w/ a prior poster that there is limited storage space. I think we had 3 drawers. But we were only there for 2 days, so I wasn't going to fully unpack anyway. There was a mini-bar w/ a small refrigerator in the room. Plenty of empty space for us to store a few items in the refrig.

The breakfast buffet was pretty good. There was a mixup. On Mon (which was a holiday) it was opened until 11:00. When we got there exactly at 10:30 on Tues, we were informed that the buffet had just closed. I told the host that we were told 11:00. He said that was only for holiday and Sunday hours. However, they offered to either allow us to choose something off the menu or they would keep it open just for us (which we did). Very nice of them. The buffet is served next to the indoor pool. It was a little noisy one morning since there were kids jumping in the pool. Since it's inside, the noise really echos.

Rotorua really stinks from the sulphur. But I think we got used to it after a while. I didn't really bother me as much as I thought it would. The hotel is heated geo-thermally. Found that to be interesting.

There are 2 washer and dryers in the hotel for guest use. Believe it ws $2NZ per wash and $1 for 30 minutes for the dryer. We did have a bit of a wait for the washer as it was a rrainy day so I guess people weren't out site-seeing. We all had the same idea - catch up on our laundry!

The lobby bar is really beautiful. The bar itself is made of onyx and is back-lit at night. Very nice. Didn't have a drink there though. Aside from the bar, I thought the lobby furniture was very dated. But we don't stay at a hotel because it has a nice lobby. Comfort, food and service are much more important. This hotel is very good in all 3. I would definitely go there again. It seemed to be the best of the bunch in Rotorua. Think we paid $145US/night including breakfast. Very reasonable.

We stayed 2 nights at the hotel and did not have any problems throughout the stay. Check in was fast although can take a while to get to the rooms as the hotell is designed in a square. Our room was clean and a decent size, we had a room facing the courtyard so not much of a view to talk about. But you can get some rooms with views of the lake.

The hotel has a pool, but is next to the breakfast and one of the dining areas, so you'll have an audience if you decide to swim in the morning. The Maori show that they advertise takes place there, but did not take place during our stay there. My partner used the Spa Treatment and said it was great value for money, so would recommend that.

The hotel is in a great location, many of the motels and hotels are on the main road leading into Rotorua and can be quite a walk to the main attractions, the Millennium on the other hand is only a 5 min walk to the main streets so can walk to all the restaurants, and also to the government gardens, the lake and the Polynesian Spa (which was good too). The smell isn't too bad, only gets worse when walking around the lake.

We left something in the room and they were very helpful in arranging for the item to be sent to my home address, and it arrived safely.

Would definitely recommend staying here.

We stayed at the Milennium Hotel for a two nights at the beginning of our tour of New Zealand. As return visitors to Rotorua we had none too fond memories of the dodgy hotel we stayed at last time, but this hotel was very pleasant.
After checking a couple of websites, we booked a lake view room. Check in & porters were friendly and very helpful, especially when we requested a change from the twin room we were initially allocated to a double room. We tipped the porter for his help - he obviously wasn't expecting this (which is much nicer than when they hover).
The room was spacious & newly decorated in a style that was somewhat minimalist, without being cold. The king size bed was comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. Nice bathroom. TV offered local and cable channel, which seems to be the norm in NZ.
The room had a view across the Polynesian Pools to the lake front.
The hotel is in a good location - 2 minutes from the Polynesian Pools (hot pools & spa), a short walk to the Government Gardens and restaurant area. As many of the hotels / motels in Rotorua are out of the central city on Fenton Street, the location was a real advantage.
My only slightly negative comment would be in regards to the room service meal I had one night - the salad tasted as if it had been made hours in advance and was soggy. But the garlic bread was hot & crunchy - ideal. So, overall it was ok & much better than walking out in the rain.
In summary the hotel was a good choice & I'd recommend it to other visitors.

Overall this was one of the better hotels we stayed in in New Zealand where comfort and cleanliness rather than luxury can be expected at best.
Our room was very good having clearly very recently been refurbished - our only criticism being that there seems to be a trend of providing very little storage space for clothes in modern hotel rooms.
Service was excellent with one exception - we returned to our room one evening to find that although it had been serviced we had not been left any towels or toiletries. On pointing this out to reception we were told they would have some sent along right away - 2 hours later they arrived!
The restaurant and bar were very good.
There is a Maori 'Feast and Review' held around the pool each evening. This is good value for the buffet meal alone however, the show itself is interesting without being spectacular.
