Millennium Hotel Rotorua
Ranked #23 of 92 Hotels in Rotorua

Large rooms, nice bathrooms, view of the lake (if you ask for it), short walk to town and a good continental breakfast included in our rate. Note we only knew about this because the website told us about it. None of the staff at the front desk indicated this was available or where to find it. We had to ask.

Now for the downside. My wife and I often do a little research before visiting a place (e.g. getting a sense for the types of activities we'd like to do) and then when we get there we spend time in the evenings using the hotel wifi to plan our activities for the next day. This hotel should not claim to have wifi because the wifi it does have borders on the practically useless. The options are:

30 minutes, $5, 15MB (yes that's right, one-five)
3 hours, $20, 50MB
20 minutes free in the lobby, not sure how much data.

Having stayed extensively at hotels in the US and Europe, exorbitant rates for internet access is nothing new. But that + time and ridiculous data caps is beyond unacceptable. 15MB is barely enough to load GMail and a couple of other sites. Come on, it's not 1996.

We tried to raise this with the staff at the front desk but they were unsympathetic, instead giving us a spiel about how great a lifestyle NZ offered. Also, they have a $4 transaction fee for all credit card swipes regardless of amount (!).

The room itself was good (hence my 3/5) but due to the cost and the lack of what in the 21st century should be considered a basic utility like electricity, I would not stay here nor recommend it to anyone.

Some of the elevators were also scary and seemed to lurch unpredictably.

Room Tip: Ask for a lakeside room. Check to see if you're entitled to the complimentary breakfast.

Excellent location, right in the CBD, walking distance to shops, supermarkets, restaurants and information centre, Good facilities such as bar, restaurants, gym, covered heated swimming pool and 2 spa pools, which currently are closed for repair :-( and that did creating some noise with the machine at times. The room is nice and clean. The bathroom is spacious. The 2 double beds were very nice and good quality. We had our dinners at the restaurants every night, the food was great. The staff were very friendly and did not mind my active son running around. We'd booked for 2 nights but ended up staying for 4 nights!

Great hotel in a great location. Handy to city, Polynesian Pools, Government Gardens, The Lake and supermarkets. Excellent frontline staff including Porters, Receptionists and Duty Managers. Breakfast buffet is good and terrific attentive staff here too. Quality of cooking in Restaurant can be a bit of a gamble unfortunatly. Rooms are all good and have airconditioning. The hotel can be pretty warm at times which is probably down to thermal heating (great in winter). They have a Maori hangi & concert. The hangi food is good here but sometimes they will cancel and take you to another venue so check when booking. A busy but great hotel in Rotorua.

We stayed in a Superior Plus room with two double beds. The room price is o. k. for what you get. In our rate there was no breakfast included. We also booked a Maori Dinner with show. This was cancelled and they brought us to another location together with other guests. The dinner was average but the show was good. The venue is not nice so book another one if possible. Staff is friendly. There are a lot of Asians in this hotel and we felt a little bit out of the place sometimes. If I would return to Rotorua I would choose a nice bed and breakfast instead. The hotel is o. k. and that's it.

We stayed for two nights on a B&B package, was upgraded to a Club room on the 5th floor, access via The Club but was not granted the use of Club facilities. Our room was everything we needed with a large kingsize bed. Plenty to choose from at the ground floor buffet breakfast.
We ate in the dining room each evening, entertaining a friend on the first night, starters, main courses and dessert were acceptable but spoiled by main courses served on cold plates. My venison was tender but almost cold. My wife had prawns and unfortunately was was quite ill some 5 hours later. The cost of wines was very high.
On the second night it was advertised as Wednesday special Lobster, we were very disappointed with the size and the amount of available lobster meat in the shell. I complained, received many apologies and a 20% reduction of the total cost of the meal. i was amazed that they could advertise this as a "Special" and then produce such poor specimens.
