This is a lovely colonial style hotel which is very well situated for easy access to shops, restaurants and the beautiful lakeside. Plenty of things to do including a children's park, boat trips, helicopter or sea plane rides around the area. The hotel was also easy to find. Staff were helpful and the hotel was of high quality. There is a very small swimming pool which is adequate for a quick cool down.

Room Tip: We had a room on the ground floor which had easy access with our car parked directly outside.

The McGregor Suite has an air of tiredness about it it, i.e light bulbs not replaced (also noticed in the main hotel reception area) bathroom tile grouting black with age, and evidence of less meticulous cleaning in those hard to reach areas. Also on a hot night we had to chose between a reading light or a fan as there was an absence of power sockets. There was no air conditioning, so open windows were required, which unfortunately provided an all too ample opportunity to sample Rotorua's fairly unique pungency. The headboards on the single beds weren't attached to the rather uncomfortable beds, just propped on the floor, rather like an afterthought.

On moving a heavy lamp in the lounge area and replacing it on the glass top table (to locate one of the elusive power sockets) the glass top broke, suggesting it was not tempered glass - might be an issue for families with young children.

On the positive side, the cost was reasonable, and the service from the front of house staff was impeccable.

Dear guest,

The issues that this response has raised are really not fair and as a hotel should not really have to answer. As far as lack of power-points in the unit, there are 14 power-points within the rooms between the bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen and lounges. Yes I do accept that if light bulbs are out, this should have been sorted prior and was a small housekeeping error. But this is hardly a matter worth writing a review for as all rooms have chandeliers & lamps throughout so lighting is certainly not a problem. It is frustrating as an owner that the courtesy should have been an apology for breaking something in the room. We have glass on all our tables etc, and I think from memory, in 27 years of ownership, we have only had 2 of these broken. and 1 was from housekeeping. For them to have broken this glass, they would have had to have dropped the lamp on it and these are 10kg solid pewter lamps (and really are quite beautiful). It is nice however to have highlighted what I consider are the key areas when you are staying anywhere on vacation, and that is our wonderful team and the impeccable service they actually received. The single bed headboards that this lady referred to not being attached to the wall, is because the second bedroom is predominantly used by children and the beds do get moved around to accommodate a cot from time to time. In regard to the grouting, I'm not sure what they have in mind as the grouting is no more than 2 years old and we cannot see any discolouration. I'm sorry if it seems I have answered this review in an unsympathetic manner, but I hope that readers when reading between the lines, can understand my frustrations. When a matter like a light bulb that could have blown at any time somehow gets highlighted yet this person can break something in the room and not feel in any way responsible for it. We are proud of all our rooms, every room is checked daily before arrival and we have a complete maintenance schedule in place which means every room has a total spring clean every 3 months, this means the room is total taken out of action for a 24 hour period where all carpets are shampooed, any paint chips are re-painted and an objective look is taken in all the rooms. I trust my answers is of interest to other readers.

We stayed at this hotel in january 2013. We booked at designroom but where upgraded to a junior suite. It was nice but needed to be refurbished and painted. The owner was a nice and helpful man, all the staff where very friendly and helpful. This hotel got al lot of charm and history. If travelling to Rotorura this is the best place to stay.

We were looking to book something different for a romantic weekend away, and end up spending 2 nights in this beautiful hotel. From our arrival to the departure all the staff are there to help you in anyway. There is plenty of free parking on the road, and the 3 thermal hot pools are a bonus, you don't have to spend more money on the big hot pool complex full of tourist not far away from the hotel :) . Great location, you can walk to the lake, museum, garden, shop, bar, restaurants...
Only down part, there is no air conditioning as it was a very hot week end, but a fan is provided and was enough. Rotorua is not famous for it high temperature anyway!
Overall, very enjoyable time spent in this beautiful old building. Will definitely go back perhaps even with our children.

This hotel is in a great location, right in the middle of town across from the bus station and tourist information centre and one block away from one of the restaurant streets. However there are many many hotels and motels to choose from in Rotorua.

We were booked to stay here for 2 nights but ended up cutting it short. I needed to access the Wi-Fi and after repeated attempts to get the "token" to allow me to connect in my room, as advertised, I was unable to do so. The staff at reception seemed to have little understanding about how the system worked and after phoning twice and visiting reception another couple of times, the manager came to my room to explain that there had been ongoing problems with access to Wi-Fi in the rooms, and that it was available for free in the reception area.

We were unimpressed with the room and decided to leave a day early. On check out the person on the desk tried to charge me $10 for Wi-Fi access. I refused to pay and this was accepted.

We had pre-paid our three nights well in advance of our arrival and when we decided to leave a day early we requested a refund for the third night but this was declined due to the "time of year" and due to high demand. I did not see the No Vacancy sign lit up on either night we were there!

Dear Karen,

In reference to your review, please find the following:

Yes we did have an internet problem in some of our rooms. The wireless was working throughout the hotel, but for some reason on this occasion, a router was found to be out. We endeavored to get our technician but unfortunately he was unavailable.

As I said, this was an isolated incident and we certainly went to some length to explain this to Mrs Marshall but she was the only one in the hotel who could not accept that. Sometimes things happen outside of our control. This of course wasn't helped by the busy Christmas and public holiday period.

In respect to the charge this was obviously an administrative error and was immediately removed when queried.

This is definitely one of the nicest hotels I have been to, in New Zealand or elsewhere. We stayed in one of their ¨designer rooms¨ and just loved it. The bathroom was recently renovated, and this was very nicely done indeed, but it still had an old-fashioned feeling to it with, as did the bedroom, although it had all the modern amenities one comes to expect from a classy hotel. You just had to close your eyes or phase out the flat-panel TV on the wall, and it was like a time-travel 100 years back, but to a hotel where only the very wealthy could have gone back then.
The service was impeccable - very friendly and helpful but certainly not overwhelming. Their restaurant was also very nice and they have a very extense breakfast selection, certain things just have to be asked for, but they have them. Also a very good dinner selection, nice wines to chose from, etc.
The only minor complaint would be about the scones for the high tea not being freshly made.
All in all, a very good value for the money, and if I ever came back to Roturua, I wouldn´t even think about staying anywhere else.

We booked this place on a last minute deals website so didn't expect too much for the price we paid. We were pleasantly surprised and it turned out to be the best two nights of our holiday. We stayed in more modern and better kept hotels as part of our trip but the charm of this place made the experience enjoyable.

We were given a room in the main building with a nice view of the deck and pool area (window didn't open though). The pool is excellent, with three levels of various thermal heating and a handy change room nearby. The only problem was you had to walk through the fancy restaurant or out through the car park to get to the pool from our room. This was only a slight problem given it was quite cold and we were walking around outside in our bathers.

Decided to watch a dvd one night and the staff were more than helpful in setting up a dvd player in our room for no extra charge. We didn't eat at the restaurant, preferring to explore and the show wasn't on the nights we stayed so am not able to comment on that.

Definitely a great place to stay and recommend it to others.
