Room Tip: Book a superior room if wanting to be a bit more flash and have air con. Standards are good if just...

We had a relatively enjoyable stay. Only setback was a false fire alarm that caused us inconvenience as we had to evacuate. I hope that the hotel can control their party goers or whoever it was better so that it wont happen again. Overall it was quite an enjoyable stay. Kingsgate prides itself in being an environmentally friendly hotel without conprising much of their quality and service to the guests. They had interconnecting rooms that gave us much convenience.

Thank you for your review response. Your comments are appreciated and I would like to add that the function we hosted that evening was well controlled at all times and no guests attending the function were the cause of the fire alarm. Thank you again for your feedback and we welcome you back to the Copthorne Hotel Rotorua in the near future.

The Kingsgate is a nice enough hotel; looks a little dated from the outside, large rooms, clean and well kept. It is located on the main street in Rotorua, but it is a 25 minute walk into town; it is located close to the geothermal area. The Hotel seemed a little empty when we were there, mid November and it lacked any atmosphere. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I did not dine at the restaurant which looked very nice, but empty. It also has a gym and a spa (hot tub), which were free and private. It was nice that when we were picked up for coach tours we were last to be picked up and first to be dropped off.

Room Tip: we stayed in the front of the hotel, on the Main Street and the traffic was not a problem, even thou...

Wifey and I were staying locally at a hotel with no restaurant., nearest was too dear for what we wanted.. then we sussed Jimmy Cooks for la carte,. Great food, not cuisine but genuine great food for the families and kids. Additionally, I seldom suggest 5/5 for service but in this case we met so very positive and friendly helpful staff that evening... you guys rock.. .

Room Tip: Only came for a meal... not for the first time..

Three couples stayed at the Kingsgate for a pre Christmas get together. The check in staff were excellent. Unfortunately, the rooms are very old and in need of refurbishment. They also were not very soundproof and so we heard many other guests making noises until the early hours of the morning. Although we expected some noise, this was excessive and we will not stay there again.

My husband and I were on our honeymoon and had 2 nights booked at Kingsgate. At check-in we mentioned that it was our honeymoon and asked for an upgrade. The lady at the front desk said that she couldn't offer us, but she could offer us "a free spa" as a honeymoon gift. Two problems with this: (1) the spa is free to EVERYONE, so it was a lie for her to make it sound like she was giving it to us for free and (2) when we went to the spa, the water was freezing cold. We waited 10 mins to see if it would get hot and it never did. When we told the front desk they said, "Oh, thats weird," took the spa key, and sent us on our way.

The pool was green and completely uncared for. When I asked the front desk about this they said, "It's green? That's odd." And that was all that they did!

Our room smelled bad-- maybe from old carpeting or maybe old heating units. It was also dirty looking and the linens desperately need replacing. I was surprised by this because the lobby and the bar area looked renovated and more modern. The place was old, dusty, dirty, and the staff sucked. (we met other people who said that the staff lied to them.... like one person checked in and the room hadn't been cleaned, the beds weren't made, etc, and the staff said that even though it looked like that, it had been cleaned!)

Stay somewhere else. Anywhere else.

Where do I start with this place. My wife and I arrived rather early around 11:00am. The front desk employee advised us that we could not check-in yet and advised us to come back at 2:00pm. This seemed like a reasonable request, and we were happy to comply. After eating lunch we returned to the hotel at the instructed time, only to be informed that our room was still not ready. Furthermore, 2 other guests arrived within the next 15 minutes and were promptly allowed to check-in. How is this possible, especially when they knew we were coming back at 2:00pm? We were finally given our keys after a 45 minute wait in the lobby. Terrible customer service, and it gets worse. Upon opening our room door we were immediately horrified. The room was disgusting and in desperate need of renovation. There was a large hole in the carpet and the dresser was full of scratches. Although we shouldn't have been surprised, as the hotel exterior is also extemely worn and in need of new paint. It is obvious that the owners do not care about maintaining this property. The walls are also paper-thin - our neighbor's conversations could be heard loud and clear late into the night. Bottom line: avoid this place at all costs.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, drive a few blocks down Fenton St. to the Pak-N-Save to get groceries. We bo...
