“Fantastic view - terrible hotel”
Reviewed January 20, 2011

The only redeeming feature of this hotel is the view. If not for that we wouldn't have stayed more than one night. The furniture is shabby and tatty, the matresses saggy and ancient. The blankets are just rough cuts of material and the linen, although clean, is so old it is an unsavoury shade of off white. Appliances don't work, the shower is disgusting and the whole place needs a lot of money spent on it. The staff are friendly and helpful on the whole, although we were told when we couldn't connect to an outside line that there was nothing they could do as their phones at reception work fine. It is outrageous that this hotel charges hotel fees for backpacker quality rooms.

Thank you for your feedback, we do appreciate your positive feedback and also the negative comments. The Hotel does offer an incredible view over the Pohutu Geyser and we are proud of our staff. We are disappointed to read your comments about the quality of the bed, and we have decided to replace a few of the beds to ensure all the beds do offer a high quality rest.

This hotel is in a great location but its current neglected standard really lets in down. Never-the-less, I found the staff very helpful, the restaurant and food were great but the only good thing about our room was the view. The hotel is in need of a good sprucing up. The gym equipment was broken, no soap or shampoo in the room, just a lavatory standard soap despenser, pot holes in the driveway and carpark and broken a grotty tiles in the bathroom. Even the name of the hotel that sits on the roof is missing letters. This is seen by thousands of visitors each day to the geyserland park and automatically gives people a bad impression of the hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback, we do appreciate both your positive and negative comments. We agree with you the view from the room is fantastic, and we are the only Hotel that offers that view. We also thank you for your comments about our staff.

We do appreciate that there are two pot holes in the car park, this is a continual problem for the Hotel, as we are in a thermal area, and there is activity under the ground. As soon as we fill one pot hole another one will appear, this is a factor of the location of the Hotel.

We are very disappointed you found a cracked tile in the bathroom, all the bathrooms have recently been tiled, so this should not have occurred, we appreciate the fact you have pointed this out to us and we will have our maintenance person repair this.

Thank you for your comments about our restaurant, we wish you a fantastic holiday and safe return to Australia.

This is the only accomodation that I have ever left within 30 minutes!

The view of the geyser at the rear is awesome and it has to be said, the NZD 95 price tag probably justifed the view in itself, but in terms of the hotel, think of a scary US horror movie where the guests all get chopped up by an axe murderer - it has that feel !

The bed appeared comfortable on inspection, but the room was very musty in smell, the decor dated and just a terrible feel in general.

I cannot comment on the food as we did not stay, but even for NZD 95, this hotel is overpriced and I would urge anybody that is willing to spend a bit more to stay at any other hotel along the main Fenton Street accomodation strip.

It may just be that I prefer to stay in better quality accomodation, but I am no room snob and had the quality been in line with a travelodge in the UK, I would have accepted it, but the set up and general feel of the hotel is nothing short of scary.

Thank you for your feedback.

We agree the Hotel does offer stunning views of the Pohutu Geyser, but we must say we do not agree with your other comments. We feel the Hotel offers a warm and friendly atmosphere, we get a lot of positive comments about our staff. The Hotel aims to offer a friendly personal service.

As a family we have stayed here several times over the last 5 years. This time however, we felt the recession had really hit this place! No soap bars, shampoo, conditioner or bubble bath now supplied as previously. Absolutely awful food in the restaurant, the food is not what it is described on the menu, for instance the chicken breast came with 'instant' gravy poured on top, with salad & chips. Was supposed to be on a bed a rissotto etc. My husband couldn't eat his steak; he thought it was stewing steak that had been grilled! And it swam in the same gravy the chicken did. Very sad that we will never stay here again as it has a stunning view of the geyser & mud pool. Used to be a comfortable family holiday pad but was a relief to get home. They've even cut Sky TV so the channels you get are just basic.

We thank you for your comments both positive and negative, we appreciate the feedback as it will highlight areas that we do need to impove on to provide a higher quality service.

We are disappointed to hear your comments about the food quality in the restaurant, we do pride ourselves on the quality of our food, we do accept that have let you down this time, we assure you we have taken your comments on board, and the Chef has now produced a new modern menu.

We do provide soap and shampoo, the change we have made is to intoduce soft soap and shampoo, the dispensers are next to the vanity and there is one in the shower. We made this change to do our part towards to environment, by reducing the wastage and reducing the unnecessary packing.

Thank you for your comments and we do hope to see you again in the future

We paid the extra money to stay in a Geyser View room & were disappointed at check in to be in a ground floor room. The reception staff said if we want to see the Geyser we can walk to the fence! The owner was much more pleasant to deal with. Thankfully the ground floor did have views, but there was a terrible urine smell coming from the drain in the bathroom. After much complaining we were moved to another room without the smell. Decor is very dated, with ripping wallpaper & torn carpet. Uncomfortable beds, small TV. Beware that breakfast was included in rate but a staff member tried to dispute this. Only reason to stay here is the views over the thermal park & Geyser.

Thank you for your comments, we appreciate the time you have taken to highlight areas that we can improve on.

We are very disappointed that you found our Receptionist unhelpful, we have taken the step of providing additional training to this staff member to improve her customer service.

We are curently painting the interior of the rooms, the Handy person has repaired the ripped paper you found in your room.

We thank you for the comments about the geyser, it certianly is one of the best views in Rotorua

This hotel was recommended to us, but never again.
The whole place is so tired, it needs a thorough overhaul. We were were told by a very bored member of reception staff to move the car so we could access our room more easily.
The room was quite big and had a fantastic view of Te Puia, but that's all. The minibar was half empty, the lamps all had different bulbs in, the carpet was threadbare and the bathroom was only vaguely clean with dirty grouting between the tiles. The spa in the bath didn't work. We were offered the key to a spout pool. That smelt like a swimming pool and really did not look inviting.
We thought we might eat in the restaurant. The waitress was attentive and helpful and chatty, but the food was the worst we had in New Zealand. My partner's steak was all gristle with no meat, he decided against another main course and had another starter. The bar closed early and we were left to drink what we could find in the minibar.
We slept, but it was not the best sleep I've ever had. We left as soon as we possibly could and fortunately did not pay for the disgusting meal the night before. We did not stay to complain to the reception staff. We did that the night before and they really didn't care.
I'm not sure I'd even recommend this to my worst enemy. The only thing going for it is it's location overlooking the geysers and mudpools of Te Puia.

We are very disapointed to read your comments, and we are taking them on board in a positive light to improve our service.

The rooms do offer an amazing view of the Pohutu Geyser.

We are greatly concerned about the unhelpful attitude you received from the Receptionist, we have offer this receptionist more training in customer service, we reach an acceptabel level.

We do pride ourselves on our restaurant, and are disappointed that you did not enjoy your meal, we have raised your concerns with our chef.

The Spout pools are thermally heated, we have raised your housekeeping concerns with our housekeeper.

We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip, and we would like to welcome you back on day

The hotel is right above the main hot springs area so expect a strong smell of sulphur for the duration of your stay; however the location is fantastic because you are right above the main attraction.

The rooms are large but a bit dated, the staff are polite and helpful and the location is quiet unlike downtown, Rotarua is a bit like the Las Vegas of New Zealand but in a bad way.

I definitely recommend staying here, as we entered our room we were greeted with a fantastic view of an erupting geyser, you just don't get that anywhere else.
