This place is so peaceful and beautiful it's impossible not to fall in love. The only downside is that if you're doing the 11km purple walk it's definitely a good idea to buy one of the maps. There's a couple of points where it's really not clear to go at all but I thankfully figured it out. Also at the moment there's a diversion in the purple route so its closer to 13km. Overall a fantastic place to visit that's completely free!

This was our first trip to NZ and to Rotorua. When we were told there were redwood trees in the area we assumed they were a local variety that was referred to as redwoods due to their color. Boy were we wrong - these trees are real California Coastal Redwoods that were planted in 1901. They are only 110 years old and are huge. These trees grow here like they are on steroids!! There must be something about the volcanic ash in the soil. Regardless, it was marvelous fun to walk through the grove - it reminded me a lot of Muir Woods, a wonderful grove of redwoods just north of San Francisco. We walked over 14K and ended up high above the Te Puia park and were treated to a nice view of the geyser erupting below. There are many paths (tracks) in the area so you should double check with the folks in the gift shop before selecting your path if you aren't in good shape. There are several level paths (such as the one through the Redwoods) to enjoy so don't be intimidated but be sure to carry water if you plan to walk any distance. I sure wish I lived closer!!

We went to Redwoods to play Disc Golf as they have a course there. It was a great course, a little bit hard to negoiate, but the scenery and forest made up for it!!
The Redwoods Visitor Centre was extremely helpful and had some great items for sale that were made in NZ.
There are hiking, bike and walking tracks for all ages & abilities, the atmosphere is wonderful and being surrounded by those enormous trees was beyond words!!!
There is something for everyone!!

We went to the Redwood Forest after a morning at one of the Geothermal Parks, so had already done a lot of walking! We intended to only go for a quick stroll, but once we entered the forest and felt the beautiful peace and quiet envelope us, we walked for much longer than intended. This is a lovely, lovely place to visit and we would encourage you to do so!
