“Lovely, really lovely!”

This is a beautiful house, run by a charming host, that sits on the top of a hill. The views are breathaking by day and by night; and Christine will tell you stories about the stars. Breakfast was delicious; the rooms were nicely appointed and very clean. The showers had good water pressure and anything we needed was available. You could get lost walking the grounds. Christine helped us make the most of our trip to Rotorua with suggestions for sights to see there and throughout New Zealand. We stayed only two nights and could have stayed much longer; it was sad to say goodbye to Christine.

Doolan's Country Retreat is a great B&B - clean, spacious, private and excellent breakfast. Christine, the owner, was very friendly and welcoming. The B&B has a beautiful garden and several paddocks, in which live donkeys and pigs. Christine introduced us to and let us feed her animals. For those people who may be thinking 'I don't want to stay on a farm'....the farm animals are a quirky addition and in no way affect the separate B&B. Really enjoyed my stay. Highly recommend it to anyone.

We stayed at Doolan's for a couple of nights in February during our month long tour of NZ. Even though we have been back in the UK for a couple of weeks, we still talk about our stay as it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Like other reviewers have already stated, the house is unique and is situated in a wonderful setting. However, without Christine as host, it would be a house without a soul rather than the welcoming home that it is.

Christine is the powerhouse that makes this retreat so special. How she does it I will never know.

My husband and I have travelled extensively throughout the world and I must say that Doolan's Country Retreat B & B has made it to my number 1 spot of all places I have stayed at. Christine Doolan, the owner, is such a delight! She will greet you at the door with the warmest of smiles and say "welcome to my home." Her home is more like a Paradise in my eyes. It sits at the top of a small hill and has views for miles of the lake and of the countryside; simply breathtaking! The home is truly a retreat and it will inspire you to your depths with joy as it has me I am sure. The home is very spacious with lots of light and the most exquisite furniture. The rooms are each very unique and are all equally beautiful; they are also furnished with the most comfortable beds ever. We ate our breakfast on the patio each morning and Christine really goes out of her way to cook absolutely delicious food. We started with fresh fruit, a variety of cereals, fresh made preserves, fresh yogurt, tea, toast and then she will cook you a wonderful hot breakfast such as large mushroom and cheese omelettes or fresh eggs with bacon and sauteed mushrooms on the side. She will also provide gluten free bread and try to meet your every request. There are also the most adorable little pigs on the premises and 4 gorgeous donkeys; I got to feed them and spend time petting them. This lovely retreat is only 7-10 minutes away from the center of town by car and it is a very easy drive. It only took us a short time to get to the Polynesian Spa for soaking in the wonderful hot mineral baths. You will appreciate being just outside of town because you do not smell sulphur in the air while staying at this retreat that is quite strong in the center of town. I cannot say enough good things about Doolan's Retreat and I highly recommend it to everybody. We will definitely be back to this absolutely delightful B & B! I will upload photos as soon as possible.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally fantastic!

Ten minutes or less from Rotorua with wonderful views, The building is interesting and beautifully appointed. The very large garden is well worth exploring. The bedroom is beautiful a good size. The host is very nice and helpful and breakfast is fine. We brought fish and chips back one night at our host suggestion and it was very pleasant eat looking at such a view and gardens. There are effectively two lounges as the entrance hall is large and has comfortable seating. The lounge / kitchen / breakfast are is very large and so well laid out that you forget it is one large octagonal room.

What a wonderful trip away we had for a night at Doolans. Christine was a wonderful host and we enjoyed our time there immensly. The highlights included the views, feeding the donkeys and pigs, the beautiful breakfast and the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere she creates. We only wished we could have stayed longer. Thanks Christine, Keith and Kylee

We spent four delightful days at this lovely B&B. The house and the grounds are beautiful and after long days touring the area it was nice coming back to a peaceful place to sleep. The breakfasts were great and Christine was very helpful with tips on what to do in and around Rotorua.
