My husband loved it as he is in the machine industry. The kids loved it as they could play on some of the machines.

“Boys & their Toys”
Reviewed November 9, 2010

Just outside of Rotorua is the Caterpillar Experience - it right over the road from the Gondola. If you still can't find it look for the BIG yellow Bulldozer in the front paddock.

This is not just a boys & their toys experience it is also a look at the history of New Zealand with a focus on the logging industry.

The experience is a combination of restored bulldozers & others that are displayed as they were found in the bush.

There is also a selection of support vehicles like old dodge trucks & giant logs. I always thought of Caterpillars as being yellow - its just the way I had always seen them. Turns out some of the early ones were grey & have been restored to show this. Others from the world war two are army green.

As you go around the displays there are areas set up like old bush huts where you can watch some videos of the caterpillars in action. There is one about daily life in a 1952 New Zealand Bush Camp & another about how a massive area of volcanic wasteland was turned into farmland in the central north island. A 3rd video is an old marketing video for Caterpillars & includes the great tractor race from the 1930's

Once you have had a look around the displays there is a Caterpillar shop where you can buy a range of cool CAT brand products fro yourself or as a present for a friend who is a CAT fan

“Worst 'Experience' in NZ - Don't waste your time or money here”
Reviewed April 9, 2010

Can quite honestly say this was by far the worst place we visited on our 2 month trip round NZ. Very unfriendly towards children, and adults too for that matter. Woman who ran it was rude, unhelpful and downright hostile. Totally overpriced. Save yourself the pain and pick any one of the other brilliant attractions in Rotorua.

“The Men & Boys Will Love THIS”
Reviewed March 15, 2010

This is a museum of Old road working equipment. I especially loved the way they had set this up as its not just a loat of old machunery, they have set it up to look like its out there doing its work. There are Video displays as well as old Cattarpiller Trucks to view and the men and boys will love every minute of it.
