“Quality Indian”
Reviewed June 11, 2010

I'm very fussy about my Indian cuisine, after visiting India and tasting the real deal. Ambience managed to exceed my usual expectations of a standard curry. Using delicate spices and nice meat, I was very pleased with my lamb curry. My dining partner had the highly recommended buttered chicken which, I have to say, thoroughly deserves all the praise!

We also had a plate of onion bhajis to start which were delicious - beautiful batter.

The only "bad" thing was the restaurant was very quiet on Sunday night, though there were a few regulars who came in towards the end of our meal. Before that we were the only ones eating in. Regardless the manager was keen to please and friendly.

“One of the best Indians we've eaten at”
Reviewed May 9, 2010

We were in Rotorua on a weekend trip from Auckland, and tried Ambience as one of the few restaurant recommended at our motel. It was definitely one of the best Indians we've eaten at - and we're an Indian/Pakeha family, so we are a bit fussy. The onion bahji was delicious, as were both our mains and our lad's tandoori chicken. Excellent service and excellent food. The fact that the place quickly filled up with locals was telling too - not one of the obvious 'tourist traps' that are more centrally located, Ambience obviously relies more on repeat business, so maintains higher standards than many of the places that only need to get the tourist inside their doors once. I couldn't recommend Ambience highly enough.

“What an amazing owner and host!”
Reviewed April 20, 2010

We were fortunate enough to visit some relatives on the North Island who brought us to this amazing restaurant. We visited Ambience on March 30, 2010. From the outside the restaurant doesn't look like much but compared to the other restaurants/cafes we ate at it was amazing! Very elegant inside and priced right. The owner created us at the door? Who immediately remembered my fiancé’s mother (she had been there last over a year ago). It was incredible, he remembered how many in her party, where they sat, and what they ordered. We were promptly impressed. He sat us (then empty) and handed our menus. After talking with us about his business he left us to look over the menu. We were all torn between multiple dishes. He was able to recommend our mains and appetizers, and explained the differences between “New Zealand Hot” and “Indian Hot” which worked out well as we were deciding how spicy to order (though myself and my fiancé would have liked it a tad spicier). He highly recommended the lamb kabobs and we ordered them as an appetizer as well as the Paner tika (the cheese appetizer), both were amazing. We loved the sauce served with the kabobs and we made short work of the cheese. For entrees I had the Chicken Tika Lababdor it was amazing, my fiancé had the Kofta, a beef dumpling. We really loved the sauce in this dish but he considered it fair. My fiancé’s mother had the tandori chicken that is the same dish she had previously and was pleased that it was as good as previously. All dishes could have easily been shared, as they were not plated but served in family style bowls. We also got one very large bowl of rice to share. The host offered to bring us more as needed. In addition to this we also had the garlic nann, which was very nicely cooked with loads of garlic. We were all very pleased with our meals and left feeling full. The wine menu was very impressive, but we didn’t have any. Service was excellent and our water glasses were never empty, also it was not obtrusive. As we finished more tables filled up and people arrived. At the time they were doing a great take out special for its loyal customers we were told, that had this restaurant been at home we would have jumped at the chance for. We really love Indian food at home and this was a great comfort to find dishes we knew we loved and were not different from home. All in all it was a great time. And I look forward to coming back to this restaurant when we visit New Zealand’s North Island again!!

“Great food and smiling faces”
Reviewed April 7, 2010

Plenty of cheerful and discreet help in choosing from a wide range of authentic Indian dishes. Our party of 6 enjoyed everything that was put before us, and there was more than we could eat; and that's saying something! The location is convenient for the town centre but is situated on a busy street, and the internal atmosphere is OK although the decor is nothing out of the ordinary. Great food - average ambience

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed March 28, 2010

Read the menu in our hotel room. Generally speaking it was the usual fare for
an Indian Restaurant. Talked to the hotel owner about his opinion and he recommended
it highly. We decided to try it. It is not a place with much ambience. There are a few
pictures and lace pieces hanging on the walls and the table settings are nondescript
as it seems to cater mainly to people who prefer carry outs. We ordered a number of
vegetable dishes and were we pleasantly surprised. It rivaled any of the Indian Restaurants we have experienced in both New Zealand and the United States. The owner and his wife who served us were friendly and anxious to please. We loved it.
