“Disappointment given TripAdvisor reviews!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

We thought this was a bit like a motel next to a lake - except not even next to the lake because there was a scrubby area with litter on it between the hotel's fence and the water! The staff were super nice and friendly and the food in the restaurant was great, although the restaurant itself really lacked atmosphere. The rooms in particular seemed small and confined and clinical. It wasn't a bad hotel there just wasn't much of any note to recommend it, sorry!

My friend and I have now been to Wai ora Spa 3 times. We ensure we go there each time we are in Rotorua. The staff are very obliging, helpful & professional. We always have a calm, relaxing therapy and leave happy with the services we have been provided. This is unlike a central city Spa where we have been herded in & out like cattle.

It may sound like a strange complaint but not having a towel rail is a pain when you are at a hotel which has a pool (so you have swimwear to dry) and an environmental policy which asks you to use the towel rail. Seemed to be a deliberate design feature which was an interesting decision.
Overall I agree with a lot of reviewers that the hotel is overpriced - paid 30% more than I has at another 8 locations we stayed at and got the smallest room. Visit to restaurant was also very disappointing both service and food wise.

I arrived and they didn't have my booking, despite taking my money. I was eventually shown a room but had to request a change after 15 minutes because of the pungent odour from the cleaning products. It didn't get better from there. Dull, grey paintwork made the place look like a prison block. Hard bed was like lying on concrete. Long dark hairs in the bathroom that were not mine. Tv didn't work until I had to ask to get it fixed. Advertised free wifii didn't work. Spa pool had been cheaply done and painted blue after the rock surrounds had been put in, meaning blue paint splashes were visible. Massive fruitbowl with two tiny pieces of fruit. Jug of milk for coffee must have been stolen from a dollhouse, it contained enough milk for two teaspoons. On top of all this, it was waaaay more expensive than every single other hotel I had stayed at on my trip. I am not a cheap skate but in terms of value for money and overall experience, a big thumbs down. Heads up to management - a trophy cabinet is not a feature to be pointed out by staff to new guests. And I'd suggest not telling anyone about the gym - a dank unloved room covered in cobwebs and old carpet is not a gym.

we stayed one night at the hotel. the hotel is by the lake in a residential area. the room is a little dated but bathroom is ok.
we were told when we checked in at 3:30 that the thermal pool and whirl pool was open until 11pm but was closed for maintaince when we came back 9:30. We were told next morning it was closed because there were not many guests at the hotel.
there were so many sand flies at night.
we felt that we were not in a resort, but a motel maybe?

I totally relied on my husband's intuition to make this booking and must say it was a fantastic choice! We got a good deal that included spa treatments, breakfast and dinner and stay at the superior suite. The place is clean and well looked after. The staff are excellent and really enhance your holiday experience by being extremely courteous and attentive. Look forward to making another trip soon hopefully this time with our boys!

We stayed here for one night in early December, using the "Lover's Delight" deal. Having just spent a week prior to this trip, at the Pacific Resort in Rarotonga, we were expecting the best of the best as Wai Ora was costing us much more per night than what we paid at Pacific Resort!

We paid for an upgrade to a spa room (#27), which didn't even have a view of the lake, it looked straight over the roof to the rooms across the courtyard. The room was small and felt dated, it didn't compare at all to the Pacific Resort.

The room was advertised as having bubbly on arrival and complimentary fruits - we had to ask for the bubbly as there was none in our room when we got there, and the 'complimentary fruits' was simply two apples in a bowl - not exactly what we had expected!!

In saying that though, the half-hour massage we received was amazing, and you definitely can't fault the restaurant. The dinner was fantastic and breakfast the next morning was mind-blowing.

They also advertise having free wi-fi, however, the night we stayed there it wasn't working. We mentioned this to an employee after dinner, who said she would have to call the boss to find out what was wrong with it, and promised to get back to us. She didn't follow it up and we had no free internet while we were there, as a result.

As I say, having recently stayed at the Pacific Resort in Rarotonga for a cheaper rate than we paid here, our expectations were high and we were sadly disappointed. We will definitely not stay here again, but we would gladly visit the restaurant again for some fine dining :)

Room Tip: If you can help it, don't go for #27 if you choose a spa room. There is absolutely nothing spec...
