this is a hidden gem given it is something free to do in rotorua. There are three thermal foot pools (take a towel) although two of them looked like they needed a clean and this would explain that everyone was only using the main one next to the bridge! The main gardens are gorgeous with a bridge over a large thermal pond, we were not sure whether there were more pools than we saw as there was no signposting or information about even what we were looking at. One mud pool near where they have the saturday market was the most active!

This place is freakin' awesome! Honestly! How random is it to walk around a beautiful little park in the middle of town, and then see boiling water coming up from the ground? Watching the steam dance across the water of the little ponds was spellbinding to me. I've never seen anything like it! Then, we walked a little further and saw the mud pools, which was also very cool. Listening to the mud glug-glug-glug as it boiled at the surface was fascinating. My favorite part was a random little rock in the middle of the walkway that was steaming, and they had erected a makeshift little fence around it to protect it (and people from it, I imagine). Apparently geothermal activity can sprout up anywhere around there, even under a rock on the pathway! As we walked back through the park toward the car (street parking) a bunch of pukekos came out from the bushes. I was able to get up close and get some pretty decent pictures. These are really pretty birds, but one of them was squawking his head off, and I noticed they have these weird huge claw feet. Anyway! It was a really fun part of our visit to Rotorua. Oh, and yes, it totally reeks of sulfur here. Most of Rotorua does.. It definitely takes a few minutes to get used to it, but whatever! It was totally worth it!

we love the foot spa's when it's not crowded. the gardens are beautiful but the ponds are ugly. boiling mud pools are cool and steaming water holes smell like rotting eggs...

Kuirau Park has always been a favourite of our family. We take friends and and tell visitors about it also. There are different levels of thermal activity. All fenced for safety. There are thermal foot pools for soaking those tired feet. A childrens playground is well away from the thermal areas.
The walk has been extended and the gardens are a delight. But best of all it is FREE.
On every Saturday there is a market with a variety of foods, fresh veges, clothing, collectibles
and even a massage.
Twice a month The Friends of the Library run their book store which has an incredible range of pre-loved books at excellent prices.
On a budget or just looking around Rotorua, Kuirau Park is a must to visit.
