my friend and i accidentally found this place when we were driving from Auckland and flipping through the BBH handbook. the price was the first thing that captured my eyes. it was about 20 usd for a twin room/ night. as we drove by the front door, we found it unexpectedly lovely so we decided to give it a go, just park and walk right in. the wall of signatures gave us more confidence on this little place.

the lodge keeper was a very kind japanese guy. he let us check out the types of rooms when we werent even sure if we would take the place. without knowing if the weather would let us go up to Whakapapa on the next day, we told him we might stay for 1 night or 2 but nothing confirmed. he simply held the room for us for two nights while we only made deposit for one night. n he gave us some useful info for our stay in Rotorua (e.g. cheapest Zorb/ Offroad, best fish-n-chip shop) and for travelling further down (e.g. best package for bungy & sky dive on the north island)

spa lodge is right across a liquor warehouse and was about one block away from Pak n Save, very convenient place. there is a TV room and a computer to be used. that little pool of hot spring is nice treat after a day of crazy games in town, and it s all you can use until 10pm or so. we end up spent two nights there -- having a hot spring, watching dvd with others, chitchating in the common area, having a beer.......

the bad thing is you need to use the shared shower room n i dont think they hv independent washrooms. so it s more like a dorm and it was quite a chill to walk the way back to room at midnight when it s 0 degree out there. but if you are just looking for a tidy warm bed to stay a night, this is a clean tidy simple place to be recommended.
