These falls are near to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and we just took a short drive to them. They’re wide, in the shape of a horseshoe but there’s not a particularly high drop and when we visited it was only the centre section which had water flowing. We were able to easily walk across the rocks which at other times may form part of the falls when the river is at higher levels.

The attraction is alongside a road bridge and near residential properties so lacks setting. There is an area to pull in off the road into woods and the access path is only a few hundred metres to the falls from here.

Not overly impressive but worth a stop if in the area.

Easy to find and park, but watch out for the closing time as we did see someone get locked in! Nice walk to the falls which are worth seeing as a way of stretching legs whilst travelling.

The Falls are easily accessible to all - not a great physical challenge to get to them which, for the less able, is a great plus point. But given where they are it is never going to be overrun with visitors, so it retains the peace and beauty that make all the difference to your enjoyment of natural wonders. As a tourist it may seem odd to say that one of the things you crave when visiting somewhere is for it to be free from tourists, but it is what we all want, isn't it?

It was good that Haruru Falls is so close to Paihia and Waitangi and a quick walk from parking, because it's not very impressive, Our ecological daughter exclaimed 'erosion!' at the muddiness of the water over the low falls, Also the longer walking trail was closed due to bad winter storms which Northland had experienced.

The water was quite muddy as there had been some bad weather but we got some great pictures of a rainbow coming up out of the falls
