We had a lovely stay with Heinz & Brita for 2 nights In November 2011. It was an excellent find, the room was great with a fantastic view over the ‘Bay of Islands’ & breakfasts on the balcony were superb. It was an easy walk down to Paihia for some great restaurants & you burnt off a few calories on the uphill return! Heinz gave good recommendations of places to visit & we had a lovely day exploring the area. We both felt we would like more time here & would not hesitate to return again to this property & would recommend it to all.

My fiancee and I stayed there for a couple of days in early January and enjoyed everything about the place.
It's up the hill though and takes 10 minutes to walk from the beach. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was also nice. I will surely stay there again.

A great place to stay with a beautifull view. Heinz and Brita have great tips for the boat tours, short walks and restaurants in Paihia.
The breakfast was great. Most B&B's give you toast with jelly, but Heinz and Brita provide much more such as cheese, meats, eggs and even a honey-lemon drink when you have a sore throat.

Allegra House in Paihia does itself some disservice. Billed as a self-contained bed and breakfast on its accurate but slightly dated website, it fails to fully convey what a find this place really is. Well situated barely a minute drive above Paihia itself, Allegra House offers stunning views, exclusivity and escape from the more traditional tourist town elements of Paihia.

We selected their highest room on a house which was remodelled recently into an architecturally entertaining mix of levels, materials and design. The room offers some of the best two-sided views I’ve seen anywhere on my travels, spanning out across the bay and watching everyone below in Paihia go about their business.

The air conditioned room is well equipped with a small kitchenette / luggage store with a fridge, sink and tea/coffee facilities; an ample bedroom with American King-Size sized wide bed, access to a balcony with chairs, table, lounger and an ensuite with double-sized shower. The place feels clean, new and well maintained.

We were happily greeted by Heinz on arrival, a casual and pleasing fellow that had no issue with us turning up a little before check-in jet lagged. He showed us around the place while helping with our bags, gave us complementary wifi internet access and then wisely left us in peace to recover from our 26 hour flight.

Outside they have a heated spa pool and a small adventurous path to walk down to Paihia that on foot is quicker but unlikely to outrun the sand flies common to the area.

Heinz and Brita the owners that run the place are very friendly and happy to book anything you need. Breakfast is also very flexible and starting early is not an issue for them. The breakfasts are also described as continental, however in reality they’re a lavish affair of fruits, eggs, croissant, cheeses, ham and breads; all served up with pleasant chat and discussion with Heinz or Brita such that you can plan your day.

Laundry is also offered at a nominal price per load for washing and/or drying. As we travelled around New Zealand for quite a while, such a service becomes greatly appreciated.

All in all, I think that Allegra house feels more like an exclusive hotel than what I’d called a traditional bed and breakfast place. Its location and quality set it far apart from the B&B moniker I’m familiar with and certainly lift it above the hotels in the area.

If you find making a booking tricky, I could certainly see why. The demand for this place with just four rooms must be very high indeed. Use this place as either an escape from the noise/road/hubbub of Paihia or as an excellent alternative to Russell; you really couldn’t go far wrong.

Room Tip: Try to book the room at the top of the house as the views are amazing.

The allegra house is but a five minutes walk from the wtarefront but resting up on the hill it has the most wonderful view of the bay of islands. This of course makes the way up and down a bit steep so going on foot requires medium fitness.

All rooms do have a balcony open to the seafront, large windows so you can make the best of the setting. The hosts are pretty nice peple, always willing to crack a joke or help you out and very knowledgeable in the surroundings and very helpful in making bookings for you.

The room we had was very bright and modern with a large bed and all needed things inside. The only minus was the very small bath. Actually it is so small there is no room for a sink in it so you have to shave (and similar things) in the bedroom.

Breakfast is served one level up on a balcony (weather permitting) and since it is served by swiss people you get a better range than in most other B&Bs. That means some cold cuts, some cheese, cereals, eggs to your liking, a large fruit platter, marmelade all in all one of the better breakfasts that we had in New Zealand. And the view is just excellent.

This B&B surely was worth the extra money even though we did not even enjoy the spa on the veranda. Going up and down can be done via the garden but this is a narrow, steep and uneven way, in darkness I recommend staying to the road. For a dinner we recommend only seafood (see review) but cannot really recommend 35 south (see review).
