Description: Alongside is an exciting social space situated over the water in the stunning bay of islands. There is no place quite like it in Northland and we are proud to be different! While there is an overall laid back, casual feel to the huge decked area, its style and touch of class makes it the perfect place to get together with friends and family for a relaxed bite to eat and a drink to cool down in the beautiful winterless North. Take in the breath taking views, relax on some of our comfy loungers and soak in the great community feel that Paihia has on offer. We offer all day casual dining . Our menu is designed for sharing - small plates and boards boasting local seafood and fresh produce. Choose a drink to match from our extensive drinks list boasting a wide range of exciting wines to speciality rums and mouth-watering cocktails.

“Great Location”
Reviewed January 11, 2014 via mobile

As far as set up, location and atmosphere are concerned this place ticks all the boxes. It has a huge deck over the water with fab seating on white ratan furniture with striking blue and orange cushions. The menu is based on tapas and is quite tasty. The wine list is extensive but those by the glass are quite pricey and not what I would term well known or quality wines representative of the price charged. As has been previously stated in other reviews the service is rather hit and miss. Some of the staff need a little training in smiling and pleasantries. We ordered two relatively simple small plates and the food took a long time to come out and part of our order ended up on another table, although that was quickly rectified.

Hi Tania - thank you very much for providing us with your feedback. We are glad you found the location and food to your liking. With our wine list, we have tried to combine a wide variety of boutique and organic NZ wine and some that perhaps are from smaller and lesser known vineyards with some well known favorites such as Jules Taylor, Isabel Vineyards and winemaker Kim Crawford. We guarantee if you try something new from the list you will enjoy it! Regarding your feedback on staff, this is something that we take very seriously and communicate to our front of house team in order to work through. All feedback is very important to us. Kind regards.

“Great location but still some work to do on service levels”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

Ignoring our better judgement and some of the less than flattering reviews ,and reports from locals, we decided to try for ourselves.Lunchtime in the sun and we managed to get a table under one of the large umbrellas. Went to order drinks and food but the requirement to have your table number is not made clear enough at entry point or at table.
None the less, a nice glass of iced cider and a very average Sav ,in a rather over sized glass for measure, saw only a short wait before our 'small plate' meals arrived. My fish and chips were excellent and Janes' beetroot salad looked great and tasted great just spoiled by being served on enamel 'pet bowls' that looked straight out of the $2 shop [ or even the $1 shop].
The young lad who delivered meals did so rather perfunctorily and as restaurant was less than half full there was no real pressure on! Bar staff were not particularly friendly either.
The 'small plate' meals, plus a side each was plenty for lunch, and the whole experience totaled $55 which we thought was fair value for setting.
We will go back again and see if a few more weeks 'bedding their operation down' addresses our minor niggles.
Menus too small and cheap looking clipped on to bits of unpainted hardboard. Did you spend too much on tables and chairs to afford more professional looking and more readable menus.
Midday saw preponderance of grey haired ' mature ' clientele and this age group does rely on reasonable size print on notices and menus. That does include the reviewer here!

Hi Russellite, thank you for taking the time out to review Alongside. We have taken your feedback on board regarding the confusion of presenting your table number when ordering and are looking into ways to managing this better - although we do have signs at both the front desk & bar, we understand that it may confuse people. Unfortunately we felt that the traditional 'number on a stem' system wouldn't work for both reasons of wind conditions and size of the deck. We are also looking into resolving issues with the menus as with the sheer numbers that passed through the establishment in recent weeks, we agree that they did become tatty and that is an impression we most certainly do not want to give to potential customers.

We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food and apologise that our choice of crockery was not to your liking, Again the weather and volume of diners we anticipated were factors we have to consider when choosing it.

We do hope that you will visit us again - now that the busy Christmas and New Year rush is over, we understand the need to work through all feedback received during this period as we only opened roughly 10 days before Christmas. Staff training is of much importance to us and we will be concentrating on the standards we wish to achieve whilst acknowledging that these were perhaps not met of late. Kind regards.

“18 fries for $7!”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

First time on the new wharf deck, awesome location and well done on excellent décor. Drinks are reasonably priced @ $7 - $9, but.... $7 for 18 fries, really guys? come on! I was so horrified at this blatant "rip off" I felt compelled to review which I don't normally do. If you offered good value bar food we would've stayed for more drinks but we decided to go and get a meal elsewhere.

“Upmarket and Amazing”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

Fabulous huge deck with the most upmarket tables, chair and causal couchs and cushions with umbrellas for those who want to keep out of the sun. Stunning views from this deck of the Bay of Islands with plenty of people coming and going on the water and the local new Paihia Park

“Morning nibbles and wine!”

A gorgeous setting overlooking the bay, lovely seating and atmosphere. Service was excellent. We didn't have a meal as we were running short of time but would do so next time we visit.
