“Disappointing - more a motel than a beach resort”
Reviewed April 2, 2008

We stayed for 3 nights in a deluxe studio (room 104) which was a nice room with views across the pool to the sea. It was a good size room with a comfortable bed and was relatively quiet even though there was a fairly busy road between the hotel and the sea. Breakfast was included in the resort's small restaurant which had a buffet for cereals, fruit etc. and a cooked breakfast which was freshly prepared. This was fine except one morning our order got lost and despite repeated reminders it was 40 minutes before our cooked breakfast appeared even though there were only 6 other diners at the time. We also ate supper in the restaurant on one occasion and had a very nice meal.

What was disappointing about our stay was we were expecting more from what is sold as a 'an award-winning, exclusive, 5 star resort'. There was no lounge and only a very small bar in the restaurant. Also, apart from the duty receptionist (who was located in an office in the underground car park), the housekeeper and those in the restaurant we didn't see any other staff.

Basically, this is smart motel, with nice rooms, spa and a good restaurant.

We stayed at Paihia Beach Resort for our honeymoon. We splashed out on what was meant to be a 5 star resort. What we found was a very tired resort that is due for a facelift (and is receiving one in the NZ winter).

Breakfast was included, but even though we were paying more than $NZ500 a night for the room, I was told I would have to pay extra to have a hot chocolate with my breakfast. There were flies in the breakfast room and birds flew in and ate the cereal while we were watching! And it was first in first served for fruit - every day we went down there was nothing much left but the dregs.

The other thing was the lack of staff around (unusual in a full service resort in my experience) - the only staff we ever came across during the day were the kitchen staff who were in the kitchen preparing food, the receptionist, and the cleaners.

Based on the Paihia Beach Resort and Spa website, advertising a 5-star experience, We booked a room in advance for two nights, thinking it would be a high-end treat (as it goes for around $500 NZD per night). Found it to be disappointingly ordinary. Cheap linens and furnishings. Nice view, but traffic noise. Stayed only one night. We've been in much nicer places for half the price. We'd recommend NOT reserving a room sight unseen - their cancellation policy is quite strict. The people here were friendly and the food was good, but we couldn't understand how it got to be a 5-star.

Was expecting more and something really nice and what we got was a reasonably well turned out ocean side motel with well presented but overpriced fusion food

  • Liked — The view when the road was not busy

We were in Pahia Beach Resort for two days. Being on our honeymoon, we choose to start our NZ trip with it, for its promise of comfort and relaxation.
We had an ocean facing room, where the beatiful sounds of the crashing waves were a constant.
As we dined in PureTaste, the Resort's restaurant, we realized that it was run by an award winning chef. The food was delicate and delicious.
As part of the 'Romantic Getaway' package we got two visits to its spa, which were extremely relaxing.
One of our fondest memories are of the staff of that place.

:) We absoutely loved it there!

On a recent trip to the North Island, I had been disappointed with most of the accommodation we had stayed in, so had looked for something in Paihia which I thought would guarantee quality. This hotel has a Spa which is recommended by Conde Nast as being one of the top 10 in Australasia, so I assumed the hotel would be of a good standard. I was not disappointed. It is a small, quiet hotel situated on the main street just outside of town, overlooking the beach. The staff were extremely friendly, as you would expect in NZ. The room was luxurious, great beds, linen, bath products, robes etc. We ate lunch and breakfast in their Pure Tastes Restaurant, which was superb each time. The breakfasts in particular were exceptional. They had a smallish pool and a spa pool, neither of which were used very often. Unfortuantely we did not have time to make use of the Spa facilities, even though our room rate included a free sauna/steam. They also recommended excellent restaurants for us to try for dinner, we visited The Sugar Boat, which is a delight in its own right. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
