“New Zealand Paradise”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

After a weekend of rugby in Auckland, which saw the All Blacks win the World Cup, we travelled north to Paihia. We checked out 4 different hotels, did a room tour of each, and settled on The Paihia Beach Resort and Spa.
Situated about halfway between Paihia town and Waitangi, it was the most expensive of those viewed but we wanted a spa pool to soak in and a good sea view across the water to Russell. We were not disappointed with either. Our room was large and spacious with a balcony facing out across the bay, with outdoor furniture to lie on and soak up the sun or sit a read a book.
There are five spa pools on the pool deck as well as a heated swimming pool. Towels are provided at poolside with tables chairs and loungers to complete that resort feeling. A large clear fence stops any on shore winds cooling the pool area.
The staff are very friendly and the cleanliness is of a high standard. Bathrooms have a shower over bath which gives a good high pressure wash. A feature is dispensers with liquid soap, shampoo and condtioner which do away with trying to get those fiddly sachets open with wet hands and never having them replaced the next day.
We found it an easy walk back to Paihia and the wharf and restaurants, and also along the beach front to Waitangi for a tour of a significant part of New Zealand's history.
As a bonus we went fishing with Captain Bucko and caught some snapper, YIPPEE!, which the lovely people at the Chinese restauarant in the mall cooked for us.
We would definitely revisit this area and very definitely go back to the Resort and eat at the Chinese restaurant. Superb three days that felt like a week.

Room Tip: Unless you want to look out onto the pool area book level 2-4. All rooms face out to sea except wha...

Dear Val063,

Thank you for your feedback, we are truly glad that we were able to deliver to your expectations during your stay with us.

Captain Bucko is definitely a good choice for catching fish, and we do also cook the 'catch of the day' for our Guests. Nothing tastes as good as something you caught yourself.

Again, thank you for your comments and we will endeavour to continue to deliver high standards and we look forward to welcoming you here again in the future.

Kind regards,

The Team @ Paihia Beach Resort & Spa

I am a person who is very fussy about cleanliness, the way a hotel looks, the way staff present themselves etc ....so this place came as a pleasant suprprise to me and my husband. It was more than what we thought it would be. From the time we reached there till we left we were totally taken care for and pampered. Right from the staff at reception to the house keeping guys and the staff in the restaurant were smiling and very helpful. We will definitely be back here again.

Room Tip: The rooms on the pool level are beautiful as one can sit in the room and still have a good view of t...

We returned to this resort style hotel for the third time, not that there is no where else to stay in the beautiful Bay of Islands but we enjoyed it so much the other two times.

It just keeps on getting better; reception was a delightful welcome and sad goodby, the accomodation was as before 1st class and the restaurant excelled beyond believe yet again.

Congratulations to all the team, you really provide great service with wamth

This is definitely not a 5 start resort !! After breakfast and before dinner there are absolutely no facilities. You can not even order a drink.

When booking this hotel I had a slight issue therefore I sent an email querying if it was in fact a 5 star hotel as I had attempted to call them one night at 10.00 pm and did not get an answer for over 2 hours.

That should have warned me. !

The email I had back said we are definitely a 5 star and have won awards.

Blind judges, we have stayed in 5 star hotels around the world and this is like a motel on the Stuttgart Autobahn. How these people get away with stating they are a 5 star is beyond me. Comparing this to the Clemente Palace in Venice would be like comparing it to a mud Hut in Africa. ( Actually, wanting to be harsh, because I am sick of being over charged for bad hotels in tourist destinations because they work on the premise that they will never see you gain. I have actually stayed in a Hut In Kenya that was nicer than the Pahia Beach Resort and Spa, even the word resor is a lie )

The furniture is sub standards, the toilets are tiny and you can not even open the door with our it hitting the toilet.

We found that the room even had a kitchen in it which you don't see in a 5 star hotel room.

We arrived late evening and found the staff member who greeted us friendly, however there where no porters so we struggled to our room with two suitcases and hand luggage. ( you definitely can not stay here if you can not heft your 25 kg suitcase yourself. )

We decided we where to tired to go down to the restaurant and therefore ordered room service. To deliver two appetisers, two main courses and one desert took 5 trips with us having to call after each course. No napkins, no way of delivering the main course and leaving it as they had no way to keep it warm. So all in all a very unromatic dinner for two on the balcony.

Breakfast the next morning was delivered without cutlery, by the time they returned the cooked breakfast was stone cold.

All in all, I am going to be super critical, these people need to review there rating and bring it down to a 3 star sort of motel style hotel style, actually I don't know what classification you would put it in, and. Think that is the point, they don't actually know what type of accommodation they are actually running.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the feedback you placed on Trip Advisor, we value comments made by our Guests whether positive or negative so as to assess the quality of our products and services, and improve these for a better Guest experience.

With regards to your concerns, I will endeavour to answer these;

We do not ‘self-assess’ our property and our ‘5 Star Self Contained and Serviced’ rating was awarded to us by Qualmark New Zealand upon their strict yearly assessment of our property.

I would recommend that you forward your concerns and questions with regards to the rating and meaning of ‘Self Contained and Serviced’ as opposed to ‘Hotel’ directly to Qualmark New Zealand, who will be able to clarify the rationale behind their assessment and rating systems of hospitality establishments in New Zealand.

I am somewhat questioning as to how a 21 suites boutique resort in the Bay of Islands could be compared with a 200 rooms Palatial Hotel on a private historic Italian island? – We certainly would never pretend to compare with such properties.

Once again, we do not portray to be a ‘5 Star Hotel’, but we are Qualmark rated ‘5 Star Self Contained and Serviced’, hence the non-requirement for porters, 24 hours room service, 24 hours reception, concierge desk and other amenities found in true international 5 Star Hotels – may I point out that, being European myself and having worked in 5 Star international hotels in Europe, I am yet to find comparable true international 5 Star properties in New Zealand.

I understand, upon discussing with our Maitre D and Head Chef your issues with regards to the room service dinner you had, that you were offered to either have all dishes delivered at once, or call the restaurant once you were ready for the next course – I understand that you took the second option hence the subsequent deliveries. I also understand that you had dinner in our restaurant the second night of your stay, when you enjoyed a Degustation Menu with matching wines, and all services and products were to your satisfaction?

Although we do not have a dedicated bar, all our rooms have mini-bar facilities. We do offer beverages and snacks between meals, available through room service during the summer season. Once again, as we are not a ‘5 Star Hotel’ but ‘Self-Contained and Serviced’ establishment, these services are not mandatory in such properties.

We also have an award winning Day & Hair Spa on site which I understand you also experienced and enjoyed? With regards to other activities available, we do organise on behalf of our Guests any of the activities offered by the various operators in the Bay of Islands. We gladly assist our Guests in putting together itineraries and make all the necessary arrangements to suit their particular requirements.

Contrary to your assumptions, we do enjoy much repeat business and we do not see or treat our Guests with an attitude of ‘never seeing them again’.

I would like to point out, Sir, that your lengthy outburst of anger, lack of self control, and abuses hurled at one of our receptionist upon your departure, does not portray in my view the correct behaviour from anyone proclaiming to be well traveled within the 5 Star Hotel circles, and I am convinced that this would not be tolerated in places such as the San Clemente Palace Venice.

Regards,
Stephan Rudich

We stayed two amazing nights at this resort. The staff were very informative, welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. The outlook is amazing and it is great what they have done with the pool area. Spa staff were very obliging regarding bookings and also very cheerful and helpful. Breakfast was included in our booking and there was lots of good choices and fresh fruit. Dinner was to die for. We have travelled extensively and are struggling to remember a better meal. Again, staff were informative and very friendly. Price is a little higher than you might be used to, but we definitely thought it was worth it. Highly recommended.
