Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

“Pushy staff”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013

Our hotel receptionist recommended we visit this place but to be wary of some of the pushy sales staff. Oh boy was she right. The female receptionists were well presented and very friendly but once we politely declined the extra activities (culture show and tour) which come at an extra cost, an older man stepped in and said 'I really recommend doing the combo as its the best value for you' and blah blah blah he went on saying how its the best show in North Island and that he would give back our money if we didn't enjoy it all. Again we politely declined. The man then stormed off and gestured at us whilst talking to another male colleague. I felt embarrassed after this so out of shame and guilt purchased tickets for the show. This type of service does NOT make people want to see your show or tour. Boasting about it, it makes you seem big headed and rather up-yourself. Also pressuring people like that can drive them right away. They were very lucky we were interested in the history of New Zealand. Sadly ruined experience because of one staff member.

Firstly, please accept our sincere apology for your experience. We most certainly do not train our staff to be "pushy" so your review is most disappointing and something we will take on board. I should add that our staff are extremely proud of Waitangi and especially our cultural experience, which is often quoted on Trip Advisor as "the best in New Zealand", so I can only imagine the staff member you encountered was referring to that accolade. Once again, thank you for your feedback and we will certainly act on it.

Well worth a visit. We spent a lot of time in Busby's house - very well presented with excellent descriptions. It was pouring with rain, so didn't go over to the meeting house, although I wish we had attended the cultural performance ($15). The visitors' centre was beautifully presented - something for New Zealander's to be proud of.

“Great tour which gives you insight to Maori culture”

The grounds was fantastic, the tour guide gave great information, but the highlight was the Haka performance. The group had incredible voices and was extremely entertaining.

“Informative and entertaining”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

We began with a tour given by Lyle, who managed to share an incredible amount of history in a manner that captivated even our 10 and 13 year olds. This was followed by the Maori Cultural Performance which we truly enjoyed. The performers were talented, enthusiastic, and friendly. They posed for pictures for a long time after the show and were available to answer questions. The show was educational in addition to being entertaining, with just a bit of humor thrown as well. The Treaty House and gardens are worth a visit as well.
