Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). If you're in Paihia, you have to go and visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. It gives you an impression of what life was like back in the day when the English and Maori signed the treaty. It was also great to learn more about the Maori culture.

we really enjoyed our visit to the waitangi treaty grounds, we were surprised to find it was free to new zealanders, we added on a culture performance well worth the $15 it cost, all new zealanders should visit if they get the chance well worth the time.

This area is extremely well laid out and signposted. There are explanatory notice boards all through the "park" as well as helpful staff to explain the background of the history of the treaty and its participants. The short film at the start of the visit is very good. As an Australian, it helped me better understand the traditions of the NZ Maori and the culture, as well as the British and Australian relationship with the NZ Treaty.
