Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

While staying in Paihia we visited the Treaty Grounds (5 minutes driving time - 20 minutes walking). The venue was very well organised with very friendly people presenting the guided tour, the performance of Mauri dances, singing etc and the introductory movie. The grounds are well sign posted from Paihia and within easy reach. Good parking facilities and if you drive past the site toward the golf course there are views of the surrounding bay from the peak of the hill. The view from the Treaty Grounds looking back towards Paihia and Russell are also quite spectacular. We did the Ultimate Combo tour which included all three options and the cost per person was $NZ45. We enjoyed all options and spent extra time just walking through the Treaty House and grounds after the organised parts of the tour were completed. The cultural performances last 30 minutes and you need to book into the show when you first enter the venue. You can then fit in the Guided Tour and Introductory Movie around that time. Treaty House is at your leisure. A good morning's entertainment and very enlightening. We recommend this tour.

This is an excellent half day adventure into the beginnings of the relationship between the Maori and white Europeans told largely from the Maori perspective. Take the cultural experience and guided tour - well worth it.
