Owner description: Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand's most important historic site, is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the indigenous Maori in February 1840. Set on a stunning site overlooking the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is an absolute must-see for all visitors to the North, international and New Zealanders alike. Attractions include the historic Treaty House, a giant flagstaff, a unique fully carved Maori meeting house and the the world's largest single-hulled canoe (waka). Guided tours and cultural performances run at regular intervals throughout the day. Open daily except Christmas.

“Really well done”

The trust has done a lovely job here - and the guided tour well worth the money. If a kiwi make sure you have photo ID on you as admission is then koha (donation) only. Having said that paying for the tour as extra was still money well spent.

“Natural beauty, living history, human narrative, and unfinished legacy.”

Few places hold my interest quite like this place. The panorama from the parade ground beneath the flag standard is hard to beat. The Bay of Islands lay out across 180 degrees with Russell shining across the water. The story of the treaty signing is a spring board to limitless stories and decades of controversy that grow with each year. Whether you are a New Zealander or a visitor, if this place does not make you want to learn more about the history of this nation you must not be alive.

“Unbeatable”

We closed our trip to NZ with three nights in Paihia, in order to visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. I'm delighted we did. The grounds were a short walk from our hotel, and we opted for a combi ticket which gave us entry to the grounds, a cultural performance which had all the hallmarks of being an authentic introduction to Maori culture, and a guided tour which helped us to understand the historic significance of this beautiful place.

“It's about $45 NZ. Per adult, but worth every cent”

This is such an interesting experience, learning all about how the British and Maori's formed a treaty ( or so they thought) in 1840. The Maori cultural dance is an absolute must see and the tour fills in all the gaps.

Just fabulous.....
