We stayed in January for two nights on our trip around New Zealand. Whilst there are no real bells and whistles, the place fulfilled what we wanted which was a nice affordable place to stay which wouldnt break the bank. Andrew was a great host, good sense of humour and willing to help with any enquiries (didnt get to meet Barbara). The place is about 2 minutes drive out of Paihia which makes it a quiet and relaxing place to stay. Whilst there are limited views of the bay itself, the view of the sunset over the hilly forest was fantastic. BBQ to use with sauces available in the fridge....also had free DVDs that you could watch during your stay. Only thing I'd recommend would be getting ceiling fans in the room as it was quite stuffy in there when we returned at the end of the day, otherwise, it was a nice place to stay and would definitely recommend to others.

Walkers can easily leave the car and reach the nearby village Paihia and the other beaches.

My wife & i stayed at the Bali Hai for 4 nights over Xmas 2009 & from driving up the path to waving goodbye we were made to feel more than welcome,it was almost like visiting friends,Barbara & Andrew were fantastic hosts willing to help in any way they could, they always had a smile & there was a genuine warm feeling. As previously reported the motel is in a quiet area with tremendous views,we actually walked into Paihia which only took around 15/20 mins.
The rooms are spacious with everything you need for your stay,it was so homely we didnt feel the need to go out every night.A nice surprise occured on Xmas morning when Santa & his helper knocked on our door & handed us a gift,it was very good of Santa to make such an effort after all his hard work on Xmas Eve although his voice was very similar to Andrews!
Our stay at the Bali Hai was definitely one of the highlights of our tour of NZ & we would not hesitate to stop there again if we ever come back to Paihia

The Bali Hai is a modest motel which is very well maintained. The Hosts, Andrew and Barbara are extremely helpful to their guests. The area is beautiful - though you will need to drive to town as the motel is on a hill.

My partner and I stayed at Bali Hai before Xmas for two nights. We had a great stay, the accommodation was spacious, very clean and the apartment had everything required for a comfortable homely visit.
We were in the end apartment where we had a great seaview which was lovely. Although this motel is not in the actual centre of Pahia, we had a car so it was only a few minutes drive to get there. We also preferred this since it was a little less noisy staying on the outskirts.
Andrew and Barbara were excellent hosts, they made us feel very welcome and were able to provide lots of information on the local area and give good first hand advice on many of the trips. We also got acquainted with the lovely Gandalf the Grey! : )
All in all we had a great two days staying at Bali Hai which we though was good value for money.

Paihia can be a very expensive and busy wee township over the summer months. We only had one night there, and we had been traveling a lot so we needed somewhere comfortable and easy to be in.
This motel is fantastic. It is on the hill facing away from the Bay so it was a little less expensive. However it still has fantastic bush views and the advantage of a spectacular sunset as it faces West.
The double bedroom unit we were in was spotless and ship shape. Nice plates and various things to make yourself feel at home. There was a BBQ out the back and even a small refrigerator of sauces etc to make things more tasty. A good selection of family DVDs were free to borrow.
Plenty of outdoor areas to sit and have a drink or for smokers to use.
I would definitely go back, it was a very nice stay.
One disadvantage for some would be the stairs only access, it is on a very steep incline so would not necessarily suit elderly, disabled or parents having to manage prams etc.

My wife and I were travelling around New Zealand for a month, and spent nights in a range of accomodation, but I can honestly say that this motel was exceptional value for money compared to all the other places we stayed.

PROS
- Andrew and Barbara are welcoming hosts that really work hard to make sure you get the most of your visit to Paihia. On our arrival, Andrew told us about Paihia, the places we could park in the town (and at no charge), where the notable restaurants were, the excursions we could book, and arranged our pickups from the motel.
- Spacious, non fussy rooms. We had a lovely view of the bay from our room. This is not a fancy hotel, but all the facilities we required for a room were. The kitchen was very well stocked for equipment which gave us the option to have lazy (and cheap) breakfasts in the motel. The hosts can also arrange for a continental breakfast to be delivered the night before if you don't want to do any shopping.
- Paihia is very close by, only about 5mins drive. The motel itself is in a very quiet location, ideal for getting away from hustle and bustle.
- Free parking and wifi.
- Fantastic value for money
- Laundary facilities were available.

CONS
- For the price we paid, none at all.

Well done Andrew and Barbara for creating a welcoming haven.
