Base Backpackers Paihia hostel

Had a great time in Paihia Base - hostel is located right by the beach and a short walk from the ferry port to Russell/bus stops. Staff behind reception were lovely and attentive, and like most hostels in NZ, rooms are cheap. Unlike other Base hostels it is clean, not dusty, and actually lets light in. The bar puts on different themed nights and drinks are relatively cheap. The security guys and bartenders were all lovely. As it is a backpacker's hostel (and attracts the Kiwi Experience/Stray buses) it does get noisy but does quieten down at about 3am.

We spent one night and were kept up till 3am with loud music. Beds in dorm accommodation were very squeaky and its time for mattresses to be replaced. Beds in double rooms were OK. Would suit under 30's.

Stayed here in April 2013 for 3 nights... Lovely location, clean dorm rooms. Very sociable and good BBQ nights. Central location and the staff were really friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay again. A little loud on busy nights but nothing too disturbing.

A great hostel that actually does not really feel like one as it is organised in small intimate units which perfectly match the surroundings of the Bay Of Islands. The rooms are very bright and clean. Staff is very friendly and the bar and pool are great places to meet other travelers. Just a few minutes walk from town so the perfect place to explore the bay.

The hostel itself was rather nice. It is located just a few steps from the beach, and you can reach Paihia wharf in about 5-10 minutes, depending on how fast you walk.

There were some things I liked bout this hostel, but I there are also a few negative points I would like to mention here. Let's start with the good things:

I found the hostel to be clean. Every room is en suite, so you get your own bathroom and even a small kitchen-like room with a sink and a fridge (but no other kitchen appliances, that is what the communal kitchen I for, after all). They even have a pool and a spa pool. The pool is rather small, but the hot spa pool as very relaxing after a tiring day out. They also have a daily barbeque, which I quite enjoys. You get a piece of meat, a sausage, a baked potatoes with sour cream, coleslaw, green salad and bread plus a free beer or wine or soft drink for only 7 NZD - a real bargain and really good value for your money. The staff was friendly, and they have a room where you can store your baggage after check-out.

However, there are a few drawbacks. The on-site bar means that it gets quite busy, especially during weekends. The hostel is very popular with young travellers who also make ample use of what the bar sells, and despite signs asking for silence outside of the rooms, it can get quite loud at times when the party-goers have had a bit too much to drink. Furthermore, some of the bunk beds creak rather loudly. Whenever the person in the top bunk did so much as turn or shift, the whole bed creaked ad groaned. Unlike many other hostels, this one does not offer lockers for your valuables. I also found some suspicious-looking stains on my duvet. Thankfully, there was another thin sheet to place between me and the duvet.

Room Tip: Try to stay as far away fro the bar as possible to avoid loud party-goers.

Very popular with young travelers. Bar onsite so its quite busy. Description was a "4 bed dorm with en suite", well turned out to be 8 beds split into two rooms with one toilet and shower. The key I was given did not work in the lock, but I was able to exchange it for a proper key the next morning. The bunk beds are old and squeaked anytime someone moved. Limited parking.
Reception staff is very friendly.

Hi Melodie S,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hostel and for bringing the key issue/squeaky bunks to our attention. As of yesterday we carried out a key audit so that we know 100% that all keys fit the intended lock. As we normally get keys cut locally we have decided to scrap that and get a professional lock smith in to service locks and recut keys. As for the bunks, we are in the process of replacing washers/screws to combat the noise problem as we speak.
I am not too sure who you booked the '4 bed dorm room' with as this is not how we sell the room - on all our online sites it is referred to as an 8 bed deluxe room (8 bed dorm split into 2x rooms) and the staff on the reception desk also sell it as an 8 bed deluxe. I am sorry that you were told (and sold) otherwise as it is not a part of our room configurations. If you could let me know who you booked with I will endeavour to rectify the confusion on this room type with that person/company - you can email to pipi@stayatbase.com if this suits you best.
Again, thank you for reviewing Base bay of Islands and we hope to see you again in the future.

A really nice hostel, I stayed here for 2 nights in an 8 bed dorm. The first night we had the dorm to ourselves which was really nice :). It is a good location, only a short walk to the beach and main streets. Good facilities and nice staff.
